  5. Status updates • Facebook posts • 420 characters and spaces (less is better) • Can include photo, video, or link to another URL • What you are DOING • Similar on mylife, Linkedin, Myspace, Google+, Yammer, etc.

  6. Blogs • On your Web site or on a blog site • No limit to size, but follow AP 300 - 350 word rule • Newsletter-type articles, editorial • Found by communities and blog search engines • How you FEEL

  7. Check-ins • Foursquare • Tags your location on a mobile phone • Find friends • WHERE you are

  8. New rules What SHOULD your content include? • Useful information • Seasonal / timely • Upbeat, light, funny, witty • Offers and deals

  10. Exception to new rules • Opinion*Tastefully worded, blogs are the exception.Because others subscribe or willingly read your blog, it is assumed that they either enjoy or agree with your opinions.Be careful!

  11. How often? As often as useful and interesting! • Tweets – 1-2 per day recommended. • Status updates – once daily (tip of the day) is good. At least once per week. • Blogs – Take time to write and read. At least one per month.

  12. Timing matters Know your target audience! Don’t let your post get lost in the stream. • Stay at home adults on-line a.m. • Office workers heavy lunchtime users • Blue collar workforce; after 4:00 p.m. • Kids – all the darn time

How to do it? • Prepare a bunch ahead of time and post on regular schedule.Be flexible – ready to substitute timely material. • Post spontaneously.Don’t get carried away. • Write them yourself.Are you a good writer? Can you spell and punctuate? Do you have the time? • Delegate.Maintain oversight unless you have a lot of trust.

  14. How much time will it take? A conservative estimate – 1 month: 20 Tweets (one per work day) @ 10 minutes each = 200 minutes 20 Facebook status updates @ 20 minutes each = 400 minutes 1 blog @ 60 minutes Total – 660 minutes or 11 hours
