Who is Trina Holt anyways? • I … • am a grad student in psychology and study communication • have been in the Professional University Teaching program for over a year, listening to tips and practicing presenting • have TA'ed several courses and got to lecture a few times too! • have studied a lot in the area of stress and coping • have done lots of community theatre • have a diploma in television and video production • taught lots of SCUBA diving classes

Preparing the Presentation • Know your material very well • Logical, flowing order • Tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them. • Write it up on the correct medium • Handouts in class • Visual aids as notes (for you and/or your audience) • It always takes longer than you think it will

Preparing to Present • Know thy audience –collective knowledge • Know thyself – what are your assumptions • Practice • Preview technology • Always bring backup • Test it first • Don’t let it get in the way • Room considerations – room to audience ratio • Background noise • Find a shirt that doesn’t show sweat

  7. Pre-Presentation Jitters(or Full-Blown Stage Fright) • Nervous energy can be a good thing • Don’t push your luck • Avoid coffee, tea, chocolate, and mood-altering chemicals • Honour thyself – acknowledge your nerves but also acknowledge your ability

  11. Jitters? - Emotion-Focused Coping • Honour thyself – check in (acknowledge, accept, adjust) • Coping techniques that take a while to develop • Pairing a word with relaxation • Coping techniques that you can use now • Breathing, visualization, affirmations • “Alert mind, calm body”
