  1. Why Do Monkeys Have Tails? Produced by: Jacob Saba & Joseph Pinzka

  2. History of the tail Different animals use their tails for different reasons. A dog uses its tail to keep its nose warm when it sleeps (I have a Siberian Husky who curls up with her tail over her nose.) or to express themselves, like wagging it. A range animal like a horse or cow uses the tail to keep flies from biting them. A monkey uses it to balance itself in trees. A lizard uses it to fool other animals into grabbing the tail when they try to eat them. The tail breaks off and the lizard is able to run away. What other animals can you think of that use their tails?

  3. Background Information Monkeys belong to the superfamily Cercopithecoidea They belong to the subfamily Cercopitheinae Monkeys are MacqcaMulatta Monkeys live usually with other monkeys in jungles or forests Primates or an advanced mammal

  4. Old World Monkeys Vs. New World Monkeys Old World Monkeys Mostly shorter tails Mostly larger mammals Primates (advanced mammals) 78 Different species Used tails to maneuvering through trees Shaking trees to ward off other monkeys Used to as third arm Prehensile Tails

  5. Old World Monkeys Vs. New World Monkeys New World Monkeys Mostly longer tails Mostly smaller mammals Primates 53 different species that we know Tails cannot grip things Have much better grip with feet and hands Tails are used for balance in trees

  6. Uses.. Grasping Balance Jumping Climbing Eating Warding off predators

  7. Tail length Longer the tail the monkey has the better balance it has. More swinging ability. Better grasp of things. Attraction of mates

  8. How Monkeys Grow Tails • Monkeys grow mostly like humans. • They’re internal make up is the same as ours for the most part • There tails grow the same we way grow arms • 1. As a monkey cells grow they divide again and again • 2. Causing tails to grow as a 5th appendage • 3. These cells divide through a process of mitosis and meiosis
