Purpose of ICAM Modules • Second Assessments in reading and math • Standards referenced • Includes multiple choice, short answer, and constructed response items • Aligned with content specifications derived from Iowa districts’ standards and benchmarks • Created with an eye to complementing the ITBS/ITED tests

  4. Reading Modules • Reading (4, 8 and 11) • Comprehending Literature • Comprehending Academic Texts • Comprehending Functional Texts • Literary Elements and Techniques (8th and 11th only)

  5. Mathematics Modules • Mathematics (4, 8 and 11) • Problem Solving Process and Strategies • Number Concepts and Operations • Measurement • Geometry • Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability • Patterns, Functions and Algebra • Solving Work-Related Math Problems

Test Characteristics • Most modules have two parallel forms (all but 2 math modules) • Modules have between 17 and 20 items each • Technical adequacy research has been conducted and is available • ICAM modules are standards-based. Student performance is reported within established performance levels

  7. Response Formats • Reading • Combination of multiple choice and constructed response • Mathematics • Combination of multiple choice, short answer and constructed response items

  8. General Structure for ICAM Statewide System • ICAM assessment coordinated by AEA team and carried out by LEA educators • AEA team works with the printer and the scoring sites to ensure materials are prepared, scored and processed appropriately

General ICAM Timeline • September/November-Review Modules for alignment with district assessment plan • November - Order Modules • January/February - Test materials are printed • March/April - 6 Wk. Testing period • May - Tests returned to AEA • May/June - Training of scoring facilitators • June - Constructed Response Scoring • July/August -Scores to Districts

  10. $Costs $ • $0.85 per module per student (2013-14) • Test Booklets, User’s Guide, Test Admin Guides • Constructed Response Scoring* • Selected Response Scoring by NCS • Reports - criterion referenced - three performance levels - individual student data • AEA Support - interpretation, use, decisions • LEA and AEA educators together score constructed responses over a 3 day time period. • Districts provide one scorer per 100-150 modules purchased at local per diem.

  13. Where to start? • Start with the district-wide assessment plan that is part of the CSIP. • What gaps exist in the assessment plan? • What specific content areas should be examined?

  14. Decisions… • Are there benchmarks in the district assessment plan that are poorly covered by the current assessment plan? • Which educators will review the modules for inclusion in the plan? • What will be the basis for the choice of modules?

  15. Decisions… • A review of the ICAM items may assist in plugging the gaps in the district’s assessment plan for addressing local standards and benchmarks!

  17. What level of alignment should the district do? • If ICAM is a component of a district’s assessment plan, the modules have to be closely aligned to district standards and benchmarks.
