  1. Cat Dissection

  2. Why Cats? • The cat is a mammal, like humans. • Nearly all major structures are the same or similar in anatomy • While there are some interesting differences between cats and humans, the most important things are very similar.

  3. Advantages to Dissection • Dissection is a hands-on, investigatory kind of activity for students. Dissection allows students to "test the truthfulness" of what they see in books. • Dissection impresses on students the normal variation that is present in the natural world. No two cats, even though they are perfectly normal, will look exactly the same. • In fact, to do well on the cat test, students MUST looks at several examples of each structure in different animals. Occasionally, quite significant anatomical variations (anomalies) will be noticed.

  4. Safety • All dissecting tools should be considered dangerous. • Notify your teacher or instructor immediately if you are cut. • Handle scissors and scalpels with extreme caution. Always cut away from you, never toward yourself or another person. • Dissection specimens should be properly mounted in the dissection pan before cutting.

  5. Safety • Do not place your hands near your mouth or eyes while handling preserved specimens.  Most of the preservatives in use today are non-toxic to the skin, they may cause minor skin irritations.  If the preservative gets on your skin, wash with soap and warm water. • If the preservative gets in your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with the safety eyewash. But this should not happen because you will wear goggles at all times.

  6. Safety • Wear lab gloves. • Lab gloves and paper towels go in the regular trash.  Skin and pieces of cat go back into the cat bag. • Label your cat bag and seal it with a rubber band. Make sure whenever storing it in the cabinet that you have the sealed opening facing upwards so none of the preservative will leak out.

  7. Safety • Please make sure to wear your aprons at all times. If you have long hair, you may wish to hold it back with a rubber band. • NO FOOD (INCLUDING GUM!) WILL BE PERMITTED IN THE ROOM DURING THE NEXT 3 WEEKS WHILE DISSECTIONS ARE GOING. This is for your own safety!! 

  8. Dissection Basics • dorsal:  toward the back of the body • ventral:  toward the underside of the body • anterior (cranial):  toward the head end of the body • posterior (caudal):  toward the tail end of the body

  9. Responsibility • It is your responsibility to respect your cat. It had life and how has the purpose of teaching you mammalian anatomy

  10. Grading • Your job is to go through and complete the Cat Packet. You do not have to dissect if you do not want to, but every individual must fill out the packet. • You will be in groups of 5/6. Stay in the same group each time. • Your Cat Test will be scheduled later in the semester. This test is over material in your packet. You get to use your packet on the test- which is incentive to complete it correctly!

  11. Grading Cont. • You will have a formative grade based on your ability to work through the dissection and clean up materials when done. Always remember when cleaning: -rinse off all tools and foil cat pan -wipe down lab table with water then lysol spray -throw away gloves and paper towels in trash -put cat back in bag with any cat pieces and seal bag if possible.
