2. Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a Pilgrim and travel across the Atlantic Ocean to your new home in America? Imagine what the experience was like for passengers aboard the Mayflower during its two month voyage. What would you have to leave behind, and what would you bring on the trip? What problems would be faced during the voyage and upon landing in America? These are questions you will keep in mind as you discover what it was like to be a pilgrim aboard the Mayflower, learn of their daily life, trials and tribulations, and what they were met with upon landing at their new home.

3. Welcome aboard! As a group, each member will have an important role to fill! • The Packerwill pay close attention to what materialsthe pilgrims should bring on their trip. • The Shipmatewill learn from a virtual journey what problems the Mayflower’s passengers encountered. • The Cartographer will draw maps of the Mayflower and its voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. • The Developer will research on what the circumstances were like once they reached new land in America. Once all group members have explored this WebQuest and gathered data in their personal research journal, you will create a How-To Guide on Surviving the Mayflower Voyage and Being Prepared for Arrival in the New World.

4. The Task You will explore what it was like to be a pilgrim aboard the Mayflower. You will fulfill one of the following roles: Packer, Shipmate, Cartographer, or Developer. After each group member has completed all steps of the process and paid close attention to their assigned section, you will use all of your gathered information to write a How-To Guide on Surviving the Mayflower Voyage and Preparations for Arrival in the New World. Questions that need answers! What should future pilgrims pack for the ship voyage and living in a new land? What problems or difficulties did the Mayflower and its passengers face at sea? What did the Mayflower look like, how was it organized, and where was the ship’s route? What should pilgrims expect once they arrive in the new world?

6. Step One ① To begin, you will take a tour of the cargo ship. Click the link below, and you will find yourself exploring the famous Mayflower. Examine the main areas of the ship by clicking numbers 1-7 on the Mayflower. In your personal research journal, you will each list and describe the purpose of the 7 ship sections. Tour The Mayflower ② Once you have described the Mayflower’s compartments, draw a diagram of the ship and a list of corresponding areas or sections. Clink the link below and replicate this diagram in your journal. Examine Important Areas on the Ship ③ After touring the Mayflower, you will take a look at the ship’s route to America. Click the link below, and you will find a map which shows the Mayflower’s voyage to the New World. Below the diagram, you will find 10 questions whose answers you can find by examining the map. All group members will record their answers and replicate the map in their personal journal. Step Two To truly experience what the Mayflower voyage would have been like and face the difficulties the Pilgrims dealt with, click the link below, which will take you to a video Mayflower journey. ① Click the Start icon on the right-hand side, and travel across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Mayflower. Record important problematic events in your journal. 8. Step Three ① Now that you have survived the Mayflower voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, it is time to meet the New World. Click the link below, and read a letter written by a Pilgrim child who recently arrived in America. Make notes of their first encounter with the new land, and what future Pilgrims should expect and prepare for. Reaching the New World After all group members complete the WebQuest steps, the Developer will be in charge of collecting data from group members and creating detailed descriptions and warnings of what difficulties were faced and might be a problem for future travelers.

9. Step Four ① Now it is time to experience what daily life was like for the early pilgrims. Click the first link below. Investigate the sections covering housing, clothes, food, chores, school, and games. Record data on important differences and similarities in the Pilgrims’ daily lives and those of the Native Americans. Make notes on what future passengers should be prepared to bring, and how much they will be allowed to carry. 11. What’s next? After successfully completing this WebQuest and creating a How-To Guide on Surviving the Mayflower Voyage and Preparing for Arrival in the New World, you will have gained knowledge on the Mayflower and its journey across the Atlantic, as well as the trials and tribulations faced by the early pilgrims who helped form America’s early years. You will have learned about important aspects of American history. To help apply what you have learned beyond this specific context, you will choose an unfamiliar country that you know nothing about, and research basic information. Then, using this information, describe how you would travel there, what you think it would be like upon arrival, and what daily life would consist of in this new world. This activity will assist you in connecting the experiences of past pilgrims with your modern day life.
