  3. Introduction • Software uses artificial intelligence to individualize instruction • Tracks student’s work • Tailors feedback and hints • Collects information about students performance • Infers strengths and weaknesses • Recommend additional exercises

Background • Has only become feasible as AI/ affordable computer access have developed • Has only been realistically used by school systems within last few years • Hundreds of companies have sprung up to offer cognitive tutoring services • Many have little more than question and answer format in software form • Carngie Learning: Company founded by CMU scientists in 1994 that effectively uses AI

Advantages • Offers individualized attention where previously not possible • Provides in depth and personalized instruction • Allows students to work at their own pace • Frees teachers to focus on struggling students • Makes students enjoy subjects they didn’t like before • “eerie resemblance to a video game”

  6. Criticisms • By guiding students to correct answer, may not let them learn • Difficult to apply to none quantitative subjects • Cannot fully detect way that student comprehends problem/ how they feel • Logistically difficult

Opinion • Very interesting technology that should be further researched/ explored • Only fully effective when incorporated with AI • Cannot replace human teachers • Should be used as a supplement in schools where fully personalized instruction not feasible • Preferably only AI cognitive tutoring systems should be used
