Aim what does williams use of repetition reveal about stanley s character

Journal #3:Stanley’s motto, or so he says, is “be comfortable.” What is your own personal motto (your guiding principal)?

Aim: What does Williams’ use of repetition reveal about Stanley’s character?

Mrs. Fordham

English11

Motifs water paper

Motifs: Water & Paper

“She’s soaking in a hot tub to quiet her nerves.”

What’s the deal with Blanche taking so many baths?

What is she trying to clean?

How does this relate to Lady Macbeth in Macbeth who compulsively washes the imaginary bloodstains off her hands following Duncan’s murder to hide the evidence of her crime?

“She didn’t show you no papers.”

What is the significance of paper? Is it real?

How much weight does the paper carry?

Song significance

Song significance

How do the two lines that appear in the text relate to Blanche, who is singing the song while taking a bath?

How is Blanche from a land of “sky blue water”?

  • "From the Land of the Sky-Blue Water" is a popular song published in 1909.

From the Land of Sky-blue WaterThey brought a captive maid,And her eyes they are lit with lightnings,Her heart is not afraid! But I steal to her lodge at dawning,I woo her with my flute; She is sick for the Sky-blue Water,The captive maid is mute.

Napoleonic code

Napoleonic Code

  • Established under Napoleon in 1804. The code forbade privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, and specified that government jobs go to the most qualified.

  • According to the Napoleonic code, the property possessed by both the husband and wife becomes "community" at the time of their marriage.

  • In the case of Belle Rêve, however, Stanley is partially mistaken.

  • Community legally consists of "all the moveable property which the married parties possessed at the day of the celebration of their marriage, together with all moveable property which falls to them during the marriage" and "all the immoveables which are acquired during marriage."

  • Belle Rêve, because it is a building attached to a certain amount of land, would qualify as immoveable property.  Also, it has fallen to Blanche and Stella through succession from their parents.

  • Therefore, Belle Rêve would not be considered a part of the Kowalskis' community property, and Stanley would have no legal claim to it.

Blanche s illusion

Blanche’s illusion

  • “I know I fib a good deal. After all, a woman’s charm is fifty percent illusion.”

    • What does this say about Blanche?

    • What thematic concept does this quote illustrate?

    • How does this compare with Stanley’s view of things?

The blind are leading the blind

“The blind are leading the blind.”

Paraphrase of a verse in Matthew’s Gospel in the New Testament of the Bible.

Verse 14 of Chapter 15 says that if one person leads another blind person, both will fall into a pit.

Blanche speaks this line when Stella leads her away from the poker game.

What could this foreshadow?
