  4. Models for private sector involvement • Partnership between private sector and UN organisations/NGOs • Companies/NGOs partnering with the local community

  6. Not ‘first wave’ emergency response • Don’t expect to see Procter & Gamble on the beach • Preparedness – “$1 spent in advance saves $7 in losses” • Resilience • Bridging the humanitarian and development agendas

  11. Finally some warnings • Too many aid agencies – rationalisation of NGOs would be helpful • Coordination is still poor in emergencies – need better discipline in the clusters • Important to avoid a branding war when companies are involved

  12. Conclusions • Linking the development and humanitarian agendas is a win-win • Private sector has a role to play – Important to define it correctly
