  2. Theme: Definition The central idea of a work of art or piece of literature. The idea the author is trying to reveal about human nature.

  3. Theme is NOT . . . • A single word or phrase. • Family • Love • Anger • Duty and honor

  4. Theme is NOT . . . • A hackneyed phrase/ Cliché • “Be careful what you wish for” • “Look before you leap”

  5. Theme is NOT . . . • A moral or lesson. • “Slow and steady wins the race” • “You can always count on your family” • “Don’t use drugs”

  6. Theme is NOT . . . • A “should statement” • You should always do what you want. • People should learn to be loyal.

  7. Theme is NOT . . . • A statement containing “you” • You should follow your dreams. • You never know what you want until it happens.

  8. Theme IS . . . • A generalized statement about an abstract concept. Subject: Sports and adversity Theme: The way that people react to adversity is often demonstrated through their participation in sports.

  9. Composing a Theme Statement • Ask the following questions: • What is the topic about? • Why is the topic an important issue? • Who does the topic involve? • How does the topic affect the protagonist? • What problems or issues arise because of this topic? • How does the topic affect the way society functions in the text?

  10. Example #1: Theme or No Theme? The theme of loyalty is present in George Orwell’s Animal Farm as shown through the characters of Boxer and the sheep. No THEME!!!!!!!

  11. Example #2: Theme or No Theme? In The Kite Runner by KhaledHosseini the theme that a single act of betrayal can lead to a lifetime of guilt is demonstrated by Amir’s journey. THEME!!!!!!!

  12. Example #3: Theme or No Theme? Antigone, the third installment of the Oedipus Trilogy by Sophocles, illustrates the theme of family by showing how Antigone strives to honor her brother’s memory. No THEME!!!!!!!
