  1. School Games Year 7 & 8 Grass Track Cycling Competition 2014

  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1qjXVjDc8M • Team GB v Australia London 2012 gold medal race

  3. Competition Rules 1 • 2 Teams of 4 riders per school (one year 7 team and one year 8 team). At least one rider in each team should be female. • 2 Schools from each SGO area will qualify for Devon Summer School games finals (16 schools overall) • There will be a year 7 competition and a year 8 competition, with the combined results deciding the overall winning school.

  4. Competition Rules 2 • Each team will race a heat and a final. • Heats will be timed, with the fastest 2 teams going into the “A” final, next two into the “B” final etc. • Finals are “first across the line”, with the winners of the “A” final being the overall competition winners of the year group competition. • Results of the year 7 & 8 competition will be combined in order to decide the winning school. In the event of a tie, the team with the best combined time will be the winner.

  5. Race Rules • The race format is the Team Pursuit – it’s one of the Olympic events in which GB men’s and women’s teams won gold medals at London 2012. • A race is 8 laps • Teams must maintain a gap of NO MORE than 2 bike lengths. Failure to do so can result in disqualification. • Riders must change the lead rider every half-lap. Failure to do so can result in disqualification. However teams are allowed to “lose” one rider during the race. This rider must move out to the outside of the track. • The bell will ring to tell riders that there is one lap to go. • The team’s time is taken on the third rider to cross the line.

  6. Race Procedure 1 • 2 teams race at a time • Riders receive their bikes opposite the start line on the outside of the track (along the back straight). Marshalls should ensure all gears are changed back to be the same (middle chain-ring, middle sprocket) before riders are given their bikes. • By the time the riders get their bikes, the scorer should have recorded the team names on the start sheet. • Riders ride halfway around the track to the start line.

  7. Race Procedure 2 • Finish line judge to conduct rider briefing • Remind of the race rules. • Remind of key safety rules (no heavy braking or stopping on the track, hands to remain on the handlebars). • Starter starts the race. • Bell rings to announce the last lap. • Make sure the scorer records the correct time for each team. • Riders ride the half lap to return their bikes. • ‘Rinse and repeat’

  8. How to set up a grass track 12m 37m 12m 12m

  9. Safety Rules • Riders should only ride on the track when instructed to do so. • Riders should only ride anti-clockwise. • Riders should not stop on the track – if you have a problem, pull off to one side and stop outside the track area. • Riders should not use their brakes sharply. • Hands must remain on the handlebars and both wheels on the ground. • Any rider who does not follow safety rules could be disqualified and the team lose all the their place in the competition.

  10. Volunteer/ Staff Roles • 1 Starter • 2 Finish line judges • 1 Scorer • 6 Marshalls (4 to ensure riders have bikes & helmets, 2 to escort riders to the start)
