The Concepts where broken down into three different types.
Forced Air Through Ducts
Stable and standard Design
Takes up wall space
Passive Solar on the House
Uses Floor Space
Simple Heat Pump
Less Air Flow
Problems with Condensation
One of the most important ways to save space.
Folding areas give a reduction of space with
good maintenance. Unfortunately they do not
Have a long life span.
A vertical design saves space but
Is hard to maintain.
Horizontal Designs are easy to construct and work on. They are also the largest and most unwieldy of the designs.
In order to select a concept, we needed to be able to visualize the system
The dimensions of the house will not be defined until after the competition
Initially, we used 2-D methods to find the most compact design
Three dimensional models are generally easier to work with visualize the system
Components sketched in CAD were to complex to arrange
The current system can be modeled in terms of “chunks”
CompressorBlack & White
Pumps Blue, Green
Heat Exchangers Red, Orange
Check Valves Cream
Expansion Valves Silver
Liquid Line Dryers Black
Solenoid Valves Gold
Sight Glass White
Four-way Valve Brown
We modeled the system using color-coded blocks
The current hot water tank and fan coil unit may restrict the heat pump space
Hot Water Tank
Fan Coil Unit
Our objective for the first design was to meet the geometric specifications
To Fan Coil Unit
One drawback to the design is the internal piping
Based on customer needs, ease of maintenance was rated a 1.4
In the future, we could modify the design with external piping
To Tempered Water Tank
To Hot Water Tank
This system, mounted vertically, conserves floor space
Other advantages include the external piping and separate switches
In the future, more design options will be offered
