  3. CHARLES MACKAY Charles Mackay (1814-89) was a Scottish song - writer. An editor of The Illustrated London News , he published several volumes of verse . His poems were very popular with the reading public and many of these were set to music.

  4. I lay in sorrow,deep distressed

  5. My grief a proud man heard; His looks were cold, he gave me gold, But not a kindly word.

  6. Explantion I was lying sad in pain .A man heard my pain and gave me money with pride without saying any word of sympathy.

  7. My sorrow passed-I paid him back gave The gold he to me; Then stood erect and spoke my thanks And blessed his charity.
