  1. Lay Leadership Development Rev. Dr. Gemechis D. Buba Director for African National Ministries Chicago IL. February 2007

  2. LAY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT • Three technical words, • Lay - professional distinction • Leadership – position & function • Development - growth

  3. LAY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT • Defining and framing lay leadership development; • Lay leadership as a leadership category within the church with specific training curriculum certification and specific ministry office is a main line ministry paradigm • Mainline ministry orientation is often with; • Professional leaders, • Academic qualifications and • Ordination systems

  4. LAY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT • In the process of defining and framing lay leadership development the two common ways of dealing with the task are; • Organic congregational ministry training with continuum • Centralized Judicatory training with certification and licensing

  5. LAY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT • Both approaches have their merits in ministry, however organic congregational ministry training (ocmt) with a continuum approach works in the actual life of a congregation to prepare the body of Christ and position it at the front line for mission.

  6. Organic Congregational Ministry Training With Continuum • Organic – natural birth and emergence of leaders out of a congregation • Congregational ministry training – equipping and preparing of leaders done by congregations for ministry while engaged in ministry (not outsourcing) • Continuum – preparing for ministry as a non-stop lifestyle and growth in Christian faith

  7. BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONS • Ephesians 4: 11It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

  8. BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONS • 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up • Pros ton katartismon twn agiwn eis ergon diakonias • Katartismon - equipping, training, preparing, perfecting

  9. Katartismon – preparing, equipping, training, perfecting It is a continuum of discipleship formation and journey!

  10. Equipping – to make whole or to complete Katartismon – Katrtisis

  11. Prepare God's People • God’s people or saints – agiwn • Saints or people of God are where we get the diakonos (diakonos) meaning servants, helpers, ministers, deacons, deaconesses, helpers, supporters, missionaries, care givers, contributors, providers in general Frontline Leaders.

  12. Prepare God's People • Agiwn - saints or people of God • The agiwon gather to form community of saints which is the church. • Wherever there are agiwn (saints or people of God) there is a potential to raise and prepare leaders (katartismon). • Agiwn + Katartismon = diakonos • Saints + Organic equipping = lay leaders

  13. Prepare God's People • Every ministry office (five fold office) and resource in the church is made available to prepare God’s people for works of ministry which is to raise leaders from among people of God. (Eph. 4:11-12) • Katartismon is an organic way of equipping, training and preparing people of God

  14. Prepare God's PeopleKatartismon twn agiwn • The purpose of katartismon is to buildthe body of Christ. • Building the body of Christ – oikodomen (build, erect, build up, encourage, strengthen, edify, rebuild, restore) • Katartismon – is a core duty and responsibility of pastors, teachers, evangelists, apostles and prophets

  15. Building The Body Of ChristOikodomen (build, erect, build up, encourage, strengthen, edify, rebuild, restore) • The body of Christ built in two ways; • Internal development – edifying the inner body • External development – reaching out and expanding

  16. Building The Body Of ChristOikodomen • When saints (agiwn) are prepared they develop into wholeness (katartisis) or when they get equipped for ministry they become builders of the body • The ultimate out come of properly and organically handled katartismon (LLD) is a body of Christ deeply rooted and richly edified for the sake of branching out, reaching lives and expanding on the daily basis.

  17. Lay Leadership Development • Lay leadership development in organic congregational ministry training (ocmt) approaches the task from two entry points; • Organic and spiritual core with vitality • Administrative church structure and management

  18. Lay Leadership Development • Based on the two entry points four categories of leaders are strategically developed to help the ministry function and move forward; • Vision leaders • Executive leaders • Program leaders • Frontline leaders

  19. Lay Leadership Development

  20. Lay Leadership Development • Vision leaders • Core group of leaders grounded in the scripture and prayer to discern the fundamental direction of the body • Core group of leaders with the clearest possible picture of the future for the ministry • Core group of people in intimate and intentional relationship with each other and the pastoral leader • Core group of leaders responsible for consistently interpreting, communicating and casting the vision of the body • Core group of leaders responsible for the spiritual grounding and maintenance of healthy and balanced congregational life

  21. Lay Leadership Development

  22. Lay Leadership Development • Executive leaders • Leaders elected or appointed for the actual task of administration and management of the ministry • Council, board, directors, elders …based on the constitution and by law provisions they are formed and function accordingly • They design and administer budgets, manage property issues and the over all management and administration of the ministry • They make plans and stay accountable to the plan for the day to day task of mission

  24. Lay Leadership Development • Program leaders • Specific ministry leaders such as Christian education/bible study, youth ministry, outreach/evangelism, choir, worship leaders, ushers/hospitality, stewardship team, child care, discipleship • Leaders with specific offices and vocations

  25. Lay Leadership Development

  26. Lay Leadership Development • Frontline leaders • All believers transformed into leaders to line up at the front line and take on mission • Creating or instigating organic excitement in the church for worship, mission and ministry • Lively small groups with a DNA to multiply and produce leaders • Transforming members into discipleship and instigating a mission frontline paradigm • Equipping and positioning the somatos Christu to build the body of Christ

  27. Lay Leadership Development
