  1. Individually Members of One Another • Jesus died to reconcile us to God. (2 Cor. 5:17-20) • Our mutual relationship with God creates a relationship with one another. (1 John 1:3-7) • Our special relationship involves responsibilities to one another. (Gal. 6: 10; Eph. 4:16; Rom. 12:4-6) • Fulfilling our one another obligations is indispensable to our relationship with God. (1 John 3:23-24)

  3. Don’t Provoke and Envy • Gal. 5:26— Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another. (NASB) • Gal. 5:26-- Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. (NKJV)

  4. Boastful/Conceited • BDAG: “pert. to having exaggerated self-conceptions,conceited, boastful….” (539) • One who talks big, is boastful, vain glorious.

  5. Challenging/Provoking • BDAG: “to call out to someone to come forward, freq. in a hostile sense provoke, challengeτινά someoneGal 5:26….” (871) • Mike Willis: “to call forth; in the middle to call forth to one’s self, especially to challenge to combat or contest with one;…”

  6. Envying • BDAG: “envy, be jealousτινί (of) someone….—φθ. τινι can also mean dislike someone, be resentful toward someonewithout the connotation of jealousy or a grudge….” (1054) • Vine: “phthonos [noun form, ksk], ‘envy,’is the feeling of displeasure produced by witnessing or hearing of the advantage or prosperity of others….” (#5355, 2:204)

  7. The Christian Is to Put Away Conceit • God hates pride (Prov. 6:16-19; 16:5) • Pride goes before the destruction (Prov. 16:18) • Pride is sin (Prov. 21:4) • God will give grace to the humble (James 4:6)

  8. Christians Are Not to Provoke One Another • The only thing we should challenge for is the faith. (Jude 3) • Even when a brother sins we are to restore in a spirit of gentleness (Gal. 6:1-2)

  9. The Christian and Envy • Envy is the antithesis of love. (1 Cor. 13:4) • One who acts according to envy is not exercising wisdom from above. (James 3:14-15) • Note: Gal. 5:26; Conceit is the underlying cause of provoking and envying others. This means that our conduct of others is often determined by our opinion of self.

Don’t Lie • Col. 3:9-10-- Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him— • “Truth is often inconvenient, untidy or embarrassing, and we are constantly tempted to bend it into a less awkward shape.”

  11. We Must Never Lie Because: • We have put off the old man and put on the new. (Col. 3:9-10) • One cannot be in the image of God and lie: • God is the “God of truth” (Isa. 65:16) • Jesus is “the way, thetruth, and the life” (Jn. 14:6) • The Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of truth” (Jn. 14:17; 15:26; 16:13) • God’s word is “truth” (Jn. 17:17; cf. Col. 1:5-6) • Instead lying is of the devil Jn. 8:44 • God hates lying Psa. 5:6; Pr. 6:16-19; 12:22

  12. How can we keep from telling lies? • We must believe and understand all lying is wrong. (Ref. Acts 5:1-11) • In our society a lie is acceptable to many if: • If spares one’s feelings • If it keeps us from an inconvenience • If no one gets hurt • If it keeps one from getting hurt • We must know what constitutes lying • Warren Wiersbe: “A lie is any misrepresentation of the truth, even if the words are accurate. The tone of voice, the look on the face, or a gesture of the hand can alter the meaning of a sentence. So can the motive of the heart. If my watch is wrong and I give a friend the wrong time, that is not a lie. Lying involves the intent to deceive for the purpose of personal gain. An old proverb says, ‘Half a fact is a whole lie.’”

What Constitutes a Lie? • A falsehood (Gen. 3:2-5) • A half truth (Gen. 12:11-19; 20:2-12) • Exaggeration • Misrepresentation (Prov. 20:14) • Equivocation • A statement out of context (Mk. 14:57-58; Jn. 2:18-22) • Duplicity (Jer. 9:8) • Innuendo or insinuation • Silence (Gen. 37:29-36) • Flattery (Prov. 26:28)

  14. Don’t Speak Against • James 4:11-12-- Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it.12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?

  15. Speak Evil • BDAG: “speak ill of,speak degradingly of, speak evil of, defame, slanderτινός someone….” (519) • D. W. Burdick: “The grammatical construction used here (mē with the present imperative) usually forbids the continuation of a practice already in progress.” (“James,” EBC, 196)

  16. Speaking Against One Another • Speaking against legitimate authority (Num. 21:5) • Slandering (Psa. 50:20) • Incorrect accusations (1 Pet. 2:12) • Circulating a false report James teaches to engage in such behavior is to disregard the royal law and therefore set one self above the law passing judgment on the law. (Jas. 4:11)

  17. Don’t Grumble Against • James 5:9--Do not 1complain, bbrethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, cthe Judge is standing 2dright at the 3door.

Don’t Grumble Against • BDAG: “1. to express oneself involuntarily in the face of an undesirable circumstance,sigh, groan…. 2. to express discontent,complain, fig. ext. of 1: στ. κατά τινος groan against, complain of someoneJs 5:9….” (942) • Vine: “‘to groan’ (of an inward, unexpressed feeling of sorrow), is translated ‘with grief’ in Heb. 13:17 (marg. ‘groaning’). It is rendered ‘sighed’ in Mark 7:34; ‘groan,’ in Rom. 8:23; 2 Cor. 5:2, 4; ‘murmur,’ in Jas. 5:9, RV (KJV, ‘grudge’).” (#4727, 2:282)

  19. Don’t Grumble Against • This is a sin that kept the children of Israel out of the Promised Land. (1 Cor. 10:10; Ref. 1 Cor. 10:11) • Things we tend to grumble about: • DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES • WHEN WE DON’T AGREE WITH DECISIONS MADE IN THE LOCAL CHURCH • WHEN WE DID NOT GET OUR WAY • WHEN WE’VE HAD A BAD DAY • WHEN CHURCH DISCIPLINE IS PRACTICED

  20. Don’t Do That! • Don’t Judge. (Rom. 14:3-4, 10, 13) • Don’t Go To Law. (1 Cor. 6:1-8) • Don’t Provoke And Envy. (Gal. 5:26) • Don’t Lie. (Col. 3:9-10) • Don’t Speak Against. (Jas. 4:11-12) • Don’t Grumble Against. (Jas. 5:9)
