  2. Should drugs be legalized? All of the activities in the following list involve the use of a drug, but some of these activities are condoned by society while others are not accepted. Read this list of activities involving drugs. Look up unfamiliar words in your dictionary. sniffing glue taking an aspirin drinking beer at a party snorting cocaine taking cough syrup Drinking a glass of wine with a meal Smoking marijuana with some friends Drinking a cup of coffee in the morning Shooting heroin

  3. Which is harmful to your health? sniffing glue taking an aspirin drinking beer at a party snorting cocaine taking cough syrup Drinking a glass of wine with a meal Smoking marijuana with some friends Drinking a cup of coffee in the morning Shooting heroin

  4. Group discussion • What activities do you disagree on as to whether or not they are harmful or drug abuse? • As a group, what did you pick as the three most dangerous activities? Why did you choose these activities as the most dangerous? • Though alcohol is clearly a dangerous drug, it is tolerated in our society. In fact, many people would not consider it in the same category with the “traditional” dangerous drugs. How can you explain this?

  5. Writing 1 • Some people say that drugs should be legalized much the same way as alcohol and tobacco are bought and sold freely. These people believe that doing so would eliminate the underground market for drugs and thus reduce the crime we have nowadays. However, many people disagree with the notion of legalizing drugs. Write 3 (or more) reasons why drugs should not be legalized.

  6. Small group discussion • Should drugs be legalized? What are the benefits? What are the dangers? What is the overall consensus of your group?

  7. Today alcohol is sold in most areas of the U.S., but some counties, known as “dry counties,” do not allow the sale of alcohol at any time. Though this prohibition of selling alcohol is restricted to just a few places nowadays, at one time liquor was prohibited throughout the U.S. Read the following passage about that time in American history called Prohibition.

  8. Writing 2 • Has this affected your opinion about legalizing drugs? Why or why not? Write 2 or 3 sentences explaining your answer.

  9. Small group discussion • Discuss your answers and opinions about the question of whether drugs should be legalized. What, if anything, should we have learned from Prohibition?

  10. Role-play • Scene: several people at a dinner party are discussing whether or not drugs should be legalized. Possible participants: an average citizen, a parent, a police officer, a person who was robbed (possibly for drug money), a person who likes to smoke a little marijuana occasionally, a former heroin addict, a resident in an area with a lot of drug deals on the streets . • Your role: • Your position on this issue:
