Mayan writing looks like a set of pictures. Each picture is called a glyph.

For many years the ancient Mayan glyphs were a mystery to the world and could not be read by anyone. Not even modern Maya people.

In the last 30 years or so the Maya code or the Maya writing system has been broken and people are starting to understand the Maya writing system.

slide4

The ancient Maya did not use letters to spell words. Instead they used a combination of glyphs that stood either for syllables or for whole words.

Each glyph stands for a word or the name of a person, place or event.

Maya glyphs were carved on stone buildings and on tall stone pillars.

Some glyphs were painted on pottery.
