  3. Mom’s secret! • Jane wrote for a newspaper under the pen name “Speranza” • When the Revolution hit, the newspaper was closed, so she translated other works into English. • She had 3 kids, 2 boys, and then finally a girl who died at 10 years old

  4. Oscar • Oscar was influenced by his mother’s works • He was also devastated by his sister’s death and carried a lock of her hair in an envelope – for the rest of his life

  5. Smart guy • Oscar won the Royal scholarship at Trinity College • He won another scholarship and was able to attend school at Oxford. • While he was there, his father died, but his older brother took care of the family. • He won several awards while he was there, most for his poetry.

  6. AMERICA! • In 1881, Wilde traveled to New York to give lectures in 50 cities for almost a year! • He met great American writers like: Henry Longfellow Oliver Wendell Homes Walt Whitman He wrote poems and plays during this time.

  7. Love Life… • Married Constance, May 29, 1884 • She was the daughter in a prominent family • They had 2 sons • Cyril in 1885 • Vyvyan in 1886

  8. Then he really started writing!! • He wrote for “Women’s World” Magazine from 1887-1889. • Over the next 6 years, he wrote several short stories, novels and plays. • Including “The Picture of Dorian Gray” in 1890 as a short story for an American magazine.

  9. The other love life • In 1891, he met Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas • Bosie was well aquainted with Oscar’s work and was star-struck • They soon became lovers • Bosie’s father confronted them in public twice and humiliated them • Then he finally insulted Oscar, calling him a “sodomite”

  10. The famous lawsuits • Wilde filed a lawsuit against Bosie’s father for libel • Bosie’s father filed a counter-suit against Wilde for homosexuality with his son • Oscar lost the suit for "committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons" under Section 11 of the 1885 Criminal Law Amendment Act

  11. Oscar goes to JAIL! • Oscar was arrested and spent 2 years in jail in hard labor • Constance took their children to Switzerland and changed their last name to Holland, an old family name

  12. Released • Oscar wrote one more novel after his release, “The Ballad of Reading Gaol,” in response to the pain of prison. • It was published in 1898, right after Constance died. • He and Bosie reunited briefly, but he wandered for the last 3 years of his life.

  13. Huh? • Oscar Wilde died when an ear infection set in, and he contracted meningitis. • He died on November 30, 1900.
