  1. Encyclopedias A Little Bit of Everything!

  2. An encyclopedia is a resource that contains information about a wide variety of things, people, and places.

  3. Some encyclopedias cover only a specific topic, but they give a lot of details about the topic. For example, we have a one-volume encyclopedia on Native Americans.

  4. Most people think about a set of books when they think about Encyclopedias. The books come in volumes, and usually each volume has a letter on the spine.

  5. The last volume is the index. The index is a list of all the things you can find in an encyclopedia and where you can find them.

  6. Here is one page in the index volume.

  7. An encyclopedia contains many articles. Each article might have a different author. The title of each article is its topic. The topics are in ABC order.

  8. The article on Haiti was brief. It had a title. It also had a sidebar with important facts.

  9. What is different about the next article?

  10. Subheadings are in bold print like the title. They help you find information fast, so you don’t have to read the whole article. Subheadings divide an article into sub-topics. When you are looking for something, you must know other words that can help explain what it is.
