Previous Direction • UW LT research and innovation center (LT3) developed task-based model (T5) for rethinking online T&L. • UWone online system designed to facilitate pedagogical model. • Entry into UWone through “control gates” of LT3’s New Classroom series. • i.e., not opened to all campus.   4. UWone assembled design • Home-grown front end • Design tool (based on T5), • Assemblage (student upload, central authentication, binding components together, etc.) • Home-grown course activity tools (DE) • ANGEL V5.6 for ANGEL features ANGEL User conference 2004

  6. UWone support • LT3 New Classroom series -T5 model applied to participant’s course • 6 LT3 Faculty Liaisons (1/2 time in each Faculty) – assist using T5 and UWone • 2 UWone usage support (one for instructors, one for students) • Programmers and system support ANGEL User conference 2004

  7. New Direction – why? • Overwhelming growth in UWone usage, meant for innovation. • Technology complexity. • Constant code changes caused instability. • Questions about supporting home-grown code. • Advantageous ANGEL evolutions makes it more suited for T5 model. ANGEL User conference 2004

  8. New Direction • Enterprise system - a “rock-solid,” centrally supported online course system for mainstream • “Exploration” system - a system to pilot innovations and new features with more risk-tolerant leaders. If proven, move to Enterprise. ANGEL User conference 2004

Innovation to mainstream life cycle • “Exploration” ANGEL system run by LT3 • Instructors try new features and UW extensions • LT3 (or other group) writes proposal to request move to Enterprise • UW-ACE Steering Committee approval • University computing committee, plus DE, LT3, IST, student, and distinguished teachers ANGEL User conference 2004

New Direction – how to get there? • Pilot ANGEL out of the box in Spring’04 • Basic courses move UW-ACE Enterprise • Desired functionality from UWone built into UW-ACE “Exploration” • Migrate courses from UWone to UW-ACE “Exploration” • Approved “Exploration” innovations & functionality move to Enterprise ANGEL User conference 2004

Lessons learned – You can do it if you have … • Build relationships for mutual gain • LT3, IST, DE, University computing committee, and Faculties • State a clear direction • Form a representative Steering Committee • Strong support from upper admin • And their funding!
