  4. There are 4 Types of Prompts

  5. A Verbal Prompt is… • Giving the person additional verbal instructions on how to do something • Be careful…Do not confuse it with a direction, which tells the person what we want them to do

  6. Example of verbal prompt Give the person a direction: “Sit down” Wait for a response No response Give extra help with a verbal prompt: “Find your chair. It’s behind you.”

  7. Verbal prompts are “addictive” Use fewer verbal prompts. Use more gestures, models, and pictures!

  8. A Gestural Prompt is… A pointing gesture showing the person what to do Example: Adult using a gestural prompt to show child where to look.

  9. A Model is… Simply showing the person what you them to do Instructor is modeling an exercise routine for students.

  10. Partial Physical Assistance… Provides minimal physical guidance Help is less intense than a full physical assist

  11. Partial Physical Prompt – Adult is guiding child’s hands towards the water faucet and then will let go.

  12. Full Physical Assistance is… Hand under hand assistance to complete the skill Staff does the entire action while physically prompting the person

  13. Hand under Hand Assistance Person feels movement of staff’s hand while performing the skill

  14. General rule… Do not over-prompt As person begins to learn the skill, decrease the amount of prompting Always move towards greater independence
