Smart Prevention Workshop Overview*Zebra Mussels in Keyes Lake* Goals: SMART Prevention: Model that predicts what lakes are suitable for zebra mussels Helps us prioritize prevention efforts • Gain better understanding of how management decisions about AIS are made • Learn about problem solving • Increase understanding of differences between stakeholder groups

WANTED: Zebra Mussel Plan • As a team, you will develop a plan to contain and prevent the zebra mussel spread • Zebra Mussels in Keyes Lake, WISCONSIN • Also Hagerman, Chicagon, Fortune Pond, Moon Lake, Lake Antoine, and Sturgeon Flowage in MICHIGAN • Your decisions might be used in the real plan!!

Scenario Goal: The Teams’ Role • You are given a character and placed into teams • Develop a strategy for addressing the growing concern for zebra mussels in Keyes Lake. • The local community has $20,000 to spend on zebra mussel prevention. • Allocate these funds across our region (Keyes Lake and other infested/potential lakes).

  5. Scenario: Getting started • Introduce your characters: everyone has a stake, but different opinions • Select a group spokesperson and someone to record the group decisions • Discuss your options (yellow sheet) • Form a plan (Fill Out Green Sheet)

  6. Scenario Characters: Your Role(white sheet) 1- You will receive basic information about your character. 2- make decisions based on your character info and their concerns for the area (ex. resident vs. tourist)

  7. Prevention Options(yellow sheet) • Signs at boat landings • Construction of a Clean Boat station • Volunteer watercraft inspectors • Paid watercraft inspectors • Lake restrictions • SCUBA divers • Informational packets Each of these have assigned costs.

  8. Scenario: Wrapping up • Fill out the green form. • Decide which options your group will use, and where each option will be used. • Write down other suggestions.
