  2. Where is Rwanda ? • Rwanda is located on the African Continent. • Border countries: Burundi 290 km, Democratic Republic of the Congo 217 km, Tanzania 217 km, Uganda 169 km . • Population is 8,440,820 . 1km = 1.609mi

  4. Rwanda History • Late 1800s - Tutsi King Kigeri Rwabugiri establishes a unified state with a centralised military structure. • 1858 - British explorer Hanning Speke is the first European to visit the area. • 1890 - Rwanda becomes part of German East Africa. • 1916 - Belgian forces occupy Rwanda. • 1923 - Belgium granted League of Nations mandate to govern Ruanda-Urundi, which it ruled indirectly through Tutsi kings. • 1946 - Ruanda-Urundi becomes UN trust territory governed by Belgium. • 1957 - Hutus issue manifesto calling for a change in Rwanda's power structure to give them a voice commensurate with their numbers; Hutu political parties formed. Rwanda History continued • 1962 - Rwanda becomes independent with a Hutu, Gregoire Kayibanda, as president; many Tutsis leave the country. • 1963 - Some 20,000 Tutsis killed following an incursion by Tutsi rebels based in Burundi. • 1973 - President Gregoire Kayibanda ousted in military coup led by Juvenal Habyarimana. • 1990 - Forces of the rebel, mainly Tutsi, Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) invade Rwanda from Uganda. • 1993 - President Habyarimana signs a power-sharing agreement with the Tutsis in the Tanzanian town of Arusha, ostensibly signalling the end of civil war; UN mission sent to monitor the peace agreement. • 1994 April - Habyarimana and the Burundian president are killed after their plane is shot down over Kigali; RPF launches a major offensive; extremist Hutu militia and elements of the Rwandan military begin the systematic massacre of Tutsis. Within 100 days around 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus are killed; Hutu militias flee to Zaire, taking with them around 2 million Hutu refugees.

What the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda caused. • An estimated 1million people were killed. • There are more than 1 million orphans. • Tens of thousand of children are forced to eke out a living on the land without help from adults. • An increasing number of orphans are becoming AIDS/HIV victims mainly because they lack education and support. At the end of the war, many children were left without parents, homes, and almost no hope for the future. Many of these children are scattered in orphanages, or are being raised by a relative who has limited resources, or are left to struggle for survival on their own.

What Friends Of Rwanda is Doing to Help FOR,Inc. is a non profit organization that is dedicated to help the children of Rwanda victimized by the Genocide, to become productive citizens. • Since its inception in 1996, FOR has sponsored the education of 12 students. • Of the 12 students that FOR has sponsored, 5 five have graduated from high school. • This year 2007, 3 more will be graduating. • FOR sponsors students at the Junior High level and sees them through the completion of High School.

  8. What can you do to help ? You can get involved by subscribing as an active member, a donor, or a sponsor. • Member: Persons who participate in our regular quarterly meetings, and can participate in administrative duties, and are also eligible to vote on issues that are discussed in meetings. • Donor: Individuals or groups who wish to make donations without getting involved in the administrative activities, yet would like to make donations without long term commitments are encouraged to participate as donors. • Sponsor: Individuals, groups, associations, and corporations are welcome to participate as sponsors. Sponsorship requires a minimum of one year commitment to a chosen child's academic expenses. Our coordinators will update a sponsor with the kid's progress every quarter with report cards and financial statements.

  9. What does it cost to help ? • Membership: $20/Family/Month, $12/Family/Month where a student is the head of household, $10/Working Adult/Month, $7/Student/Month • Donations: Any amount of donations is sincerely appreciated. • Sponsorship: The current cost to sponsor one child for an entire school year is $400. All donation are tax deductible.
