2. Il musical del 1966 mostra un ripensamento quasi completo del materiale berlinese rispetto al play del 1951 e al film del 1955: • Joe Masterhoff si rifà direttamente ai romanzi di Isherwood e, insieme al regista Harold Prince, decide che il personaggio di Sally Bowles NON deve essere al centro della trama, MA solo uno dei personaggi che interagiscono sul palcoscenico storico degli eventi tedeschi di inizio anni ’30; • Il personaggio di Sally, dunque, viene ridimensionato, sia nell’esuberanza che nella centralità; • Importanza fondamentale riveste invece lo scenario storico e politico, soprattutto la scalata al potere da parte di Hitler e la persecuzione razziale e culturale nei confronti degli ebrei. • Due elementi in particolare costituiscono l’innovazione vera e propria del musical: • La creazione del personaggio dell’“EMCEE”; • La composizione di una serie di “numeri musicali” cantati da alcuni dei personaggi.

4. Il cambiamento di parte della trama del musical nella sua trasformazione a film musicale del 1972, ad opera di Bob Fosse e del suo sceneggiatore Joy P. Allen, rende necessaria l’eliminazione di alcune canzoni originali e la composizione di altre, nuove e in linea con la nuova storia: • Sparisce la trama dell’amore maturo tra Herr Schultz e Frl.
