  1. CRANE FATALITIES From Jan 1985 - Dec 1989 355 DEATHS 175 from Boom or Crane Contact with energized powerlines (50%) 43 from Boom Collapse (12%) 17 from 2-Blocking (5%) 69 from Crane Overturning (19%) 48 from Load Dropping (14%)

  2. Visual judgement of clearance between raised booms of hoist lines and power lines is subject to error. (Against a bright sky, it is difficult for a viewer on the ground or in Worker attention is directed or diverted to other activities. (Operational personnel looking at the load at the time of contact) the cab to correctly gauge the distance between a power line and a hoist line or raised boom) FOR YEARS, BARE UNINSULATED, HIGH-VOLTAGE POWER DISTRIBUTION AND TRANSMISSION LINES HAVE CREATED A HAZARD TO USERS OF CRANES AND OTHER EQUIPMENT THAT CAN REACH AND TOUCH THEM. SUCH POWERLINES ARE NOT EASILY OBSERVED BY THE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR AND SUPPORTING WORKCREWS BECAUSE: The power lines are above the operating personnel and outside normal functional range of vision. (People generally look horizontal or towards the ground, not upwards) The powerlines may be camouflaged. (The viewer is unable to see the lines against a background of trees, buildings, etc.)

  3. While contact with overhead high-voltage lines represents • only 5% of the total electrical accidents, it is responsible for • approximately 45% of the fatalities. • MOST OF THESE ACCIDENTS COULD HAVE BEEN • AVOIDED BY THE PROPER INSTALLATION AND • USE OF A HIGH-VOLTAGE PROXIMITY WARNING • SYSTEM. • DURING THE PAST 25 YEARS, THERE HAS NEVER • BEEN A SINGLE INJURY OR ACCIDENT INVOLVING • EQUIPMENT EQUIPPED WITH A SIGALARM THAT IS • INSTALLED AND ADJUSTED PROPERLY.

  4. SIGALARM is a patented, solid state electronic safety system used for detecting the electrostatic field of any AC power line. It provides both audible and visual warning signals to alert the operator and attendant ground personnel when the boom comes within proximity of an energized high-voltage power line. A SIGALARM system is an “electronic eye” that serves as a backup operational aid.

  5. VIDEO

  6. Two Operation Modes • As an automatic early warning system. • Automatically Starts on Highest Sensitivity • As a proximity warning system • Set alarm distance

  7. Construction Applications • Cranes • Shovels • Concrete Pumps Trucks • Dump Trucks • Aerial Lifts • Boom Trucks • Drill Rigs • House Movers

  8. Other Applications • Utility Companies • Fire Departments • Railroads • Billboard Equipment • TV Broadcast Vehicles

  9. Special Features • System goes to MAX sensitivity at startup • Can startup automatically or with switch • Entire length of boom – tip to base – is protected • Complete system check can be done at any time • No false alarms due to external interference • Provides warning of lightening/electrical storms • Simple adjustment of warning zone • Operator does NOT need to know voltage of line • System can be used to confirm powerline shutoff

  10. COST On 60Ton (300K) about 1.6% of Cost On 20Ton (100K) about 5% of Cost $4000 - $5725
