Energy terms

Energy Terms

  • Calorie (Cal) The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius. One calorie equals 4.187 joules or 0.003969 British thermal units (Btu).

  • British thermal unit (Btu) 1. A unit of energy = 252 calories. 2. energy needed to raise T of 1 pound of H2O one degree F.

  • Joule - A unit of energy. One joule equals 0.2388 calories. How many Btu?

  • Watt – Rate of energy conversion. One watt equals one joule of energy per second.

    • Kilowatt: 1000

    • Megawatt: 1,000,000

    • Gigawatt: 1,000,000,000

    • Terrawatt: 1,000,000,000,000
