    36. Accessibility Forum – February 2002 Project Goals Foster common understanding of the Final Standard for 508 by all stakeholders Not about defining the Standard Defining and modifying the Standard is the job of the Access Board Promote clear and consistent communication regarding the accessibility of E&IT products Not about defining conformance Not about conducting compliance testing Rather about understanding practical ways to help all stakeholders meet accessibility requirements

    37. Accessibility Forum – February 2002 Plan to Meet Project Goals To the extent possible the team will identify, document and develop objective processes for assessing the accessibility of E&IT based on the technical provisions of the Final Standard for Section 508 Analyze the Standard for necessary assumptions, preconditions, suggestions for clarification, practical approaches and consistent reporting terminology Inventory available resources that can help to assess the accessibility of E&IT products as defined by the Standard

    38. Accessibility Forum – February 2002 Accomplishments Documented team consensus project plan Project objectives Project scope Tasks and deliverables Identified three tasks Analyze the Standard (underway) Inventory accessibility resources (underway) Investigate accessibility reporting (follows)

    39. Accessibility Forum – February 2002 Tasks Underway Analyze the Standard Analysis ‘instrument’ developed to promote consistent review by all team members Basic questions to ask about each provision Structured approach towards common understanding Strong collaboration on terminology with ITTATC Inventory Accessibility Resources Matrix of existing tools, techniques, practices and related standards Identify the applicability of resources to each provision

    40. Accessibility Forum – February 2002 Current Results Analyze the Standard Initial draft analysis in progress for 1194.21 - Software and Operating Systems 1194.22 - Web based Intranet and Internet Information and Applications 1194.23 - Telecommunication Products Inventory Accessibility Resources Initial inventory in progress for 1194.21, 1194.22, 1194.23 More detailed review of selected tools for 1194.22 ‘Worst case’ web-site developed as basis for review

    43. Accessibility Forum – February 2002 Perceptions and Concerns Perception that project will result in third party testing Testing after development is very late and expensive Concern that project will lead to mandated testing Increased cost to Industry, limited expensive product set available to Government Fear disclosure of proprietary internal measurement Restricted product innovation and competitive advantage Worry about setting a ceiling for accessibility Implementing the letter of the law rather than the intent

    44. Accessibility Forum – February 2002 Objective Measures Project Some Current Results Accessibility Forum Meeting February 27, 2002
