  1. South Lewis Central School District “RttT Mini-Series Finale” June 2014 Faculty Meeting

  2. Purpose… • Review RttT

  3. ELA… • Implementing the state modules (the curriculum is called the “skills strand” and “domains” at UPK-2) in K-9th grade this year • Implementing in UPK and 10th grade next year • Implementing in 11th grade in 2015-16, this group of students will be the first required to take the CC Regents Exam (they are our current 9th graders) • Implementing in 12th grade in 2016-17

  4. ELA… • What can we all know/do to support the shifts: • Increase the amount of non-fiction reading students are required to do • Have students cite the text that supports their thinking and their answers • Add research projects where students construct their own understandings • Ensure the texts are challenging

  5. Mathematics… • Implementing the state modules in 5th Gr. to Algebra this year • Our current 9th graders will be provided CC math instruction up through high school and will take Regents based on the CC • Implementing in UPK-4th Gr. and Geometry next year • Implementing in Algebra II in 2015-16 • Implementing in Pre-Calculus in 2016-17

  6. Mathematics… • What should we all know about the shifts: • A priority is on students “seeing” how math works, rather than on memorizing the steps to solve a problem • Students need to understand the math to know when to use it in real life applications • Once students have been taught a concept it needs to be practiced to ensure fluency

  7. Mathematics… • How would you solve: • 243 – 87 = • The following is the CC way this concept would be introduced. Eventually students do learn the algorithm way to solve the problem, but not until they’ve mastered the conceptual understanding of what subtraction is.

  8. PARCC… • It stands for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career • The NY Board of Regents might choose to have PARCC be our testing program for ELA and mathematics, 3-11 • As of now, we expect PARCC to begin in 2015-16 • Sample tests are available (end of year and performance based assessments) http://www.parcconline.org/practice-tests • A priority for everyone is to get students familiar with on-line testing

  9. Levels… • On 3-8 ELA and mathematics assessments the “new” descriptions of the levels are as follows: • Level 4 - Excel • Level 3 – Proficient (meets Common Core expectations) • Level 2 – Partially Meets CC Expectations (on track to meet current graduation requirements) • Level 1 – Well-Below Proficient

  10. 3-8 Results and AIS… • The state will provide us guidance each year for which students are required to receive AIS, based on 3-8 ELA and mathematics scores. • However, we expect that we will be given a conversion chart in future years, as we did this current year, and we will not be required to provide to all students scoring a level 1 or 2.

  11. Levels… • On Common Core Regents Exams the “new” descriptions of the levels are as follows: • Level 5 – Exceed CC Expectations – • scale score comparable to current 85 • Level 4 – Meet CC Expectations – • scale score comparable to current 80 in math and 75 in ELA • Level 3 – Partially Meets Common Core Expectations, but Meets Graduation Requirements – • scale score comparable to current 65 • Level 2 – Doesn’t Meet CC Expectations (but meets SWD safety net) – • scale score comparable to current 55 • Level 1 – Well-Below Proficient • scale score 54 or below

  12. Passing a CC Regents… • Our current 9th graders will be provided CC instruction in ELA and mathematics throughout high school • These students will need to reach the level 3 to pass (65) the Regents • It is the class of 2022 (our current 4th graders) who the state may choose to require that a level 4 (a score of 75 in ELA and 80 in math) is needed to pass a Regents

  13. Social Studies… • A new framework was adopted in April 2014 • http://www.engageny.org/sites/default/files/resource/attachments/ss-framework-9-12.pdf • http://www.engageny.org/sites/default/files/resource/attachments/ss-framework-k-8.pdf • The Global and US History Regents will not change to reflect the new framework until at least 2016-17, so the middle-high school implementation may not be for a couple years • The elementary will work on an implementation plan during the 2014-15 school year

  14. Science… • Still waiting to see if the Next Generation Science Standards are adopted by NYS.
