  4. Background • 1999- ONIX for Books success • 2002 Editeur sample formats • 2002 NISO White Paper • 2002- NISO/Editeur JWP • 2003- Development of formats

  5. Process (JWP) • Business cases  • Format subgroups • Pilots & publication • Early attention to underlying concepts: • Definitions (subscription product, work, manifestation, hosted collection…) • Identifiers for the above, and for parties too

  6. Formats and status • SOH (online holdings) • SPS (products and subscriptions) • SRN (release notification) • [Coverage statement] • [Article-level SRN] • [ONIX for license terms]

  7. SOH – Serials Online Holdings • Conveys holdings information from suppliers or intermediaries to subscribing organizations. • Two messages (by host, by title) • Piloting of version 1 complete • Version 1.0 in production (Sept 2005) • Currently in use

  8. SPS – Serials products and subscriptions • Conveys information about subscription products, optionally with prices, subscription info (4 messages) • Version 0.91 published (April 2006) • Pilots announced, not completed

  9. SRN – Serials Release Notification • Conveys information about the publication or electronic availability of serial releases • Version 0.91 published (April 2006) • Pilots announced, not completed

  10. Article-level SRN • Will include article metadata for serial releases • Currently in development with some business partners • Pilot projects needed • Not yet published

  11. Coverage statement • A structure to express detailed enumeration and chronology for holdings or coverage of serial versions • Draft version awaiting review, not yet published • Will be incorporated into SOH & SPS

  12. ONIX for license terms • Supports the communication of license terms from one party to another • Suitable for loading into an ERMS and other uses • Currently in development and review; in conjunction with DLF/ERMI. LEWG. • Mapping to/from ERMI list of terms • Tools for producing & reading OLT format

  13. Expected deliverables For each format: • XML Schema • Outline specification (overview) • Detailed user guide For ONIX for Serials in general: • ONIX for Serials Glossary • ONIX code lists (eye-readable)

  14. Ongoing activities • Completion of documentation • Completion of piloting! (SPS & SRN) • Revisions based on pilot experiences • and publication of version 1.0 • SRN article-level format

  15. Changes in JWP administration • JWP itself now replaced by steering committee, chaired by Brian Green (director of EDItEUR) • Format teams now inactive, except SRN • Communication now takes place on 2 lists: info & implementers
