  2. The Beginning of the Synthetic Turf Industry • The Artificial Turf Market was launched over 40 years ago in the Astrodome at Houston, Texas. Astroturf used nylon tuffs for the • grass, the next company that manufactured athletic fields learned • to extrude Polyethylene, and that company is now Playfield. • Nylon has lead problems whereas Poly is considered to be lead safe. Most of the sales in the early years of the industry were to large professional Athletic fields. The desire to reduce high maintenance expense, improve appearance, provide all-weather playability and increased playing hours are factors in driving this large Athletic field business. • Today this business is thriving. Beautiful new grasses are luxurious and durable. Schools and cities replace existing fields and public areas with artificial turf. The homeowner has liked what they see! • The residential customer wants the same thing at home!
