  12. About the Ordway Opened in 1985, the Ordway Center for Performing Arts is now Saint Paul’s premiere performing arts venue.

  15. 2005 – The Height of Conflict One of four resident arts organizations withdraws from using the facility Another organization begins seriously exploring the feasibility of building a new venue Simultaneously, Ordway and other resident arts organizations are involved in aggressive (and much needed) endowment campaigns

  16. Funders’ Dilemmas Struggling with responding positively to “endowing status quo bad behavior” Risk of building another facility: a dark Ordway would not be in Saint Paul’s best interest ? How can these issues be addressed?

  18. Task Force Three board members from each resident arts organization Representatives from funding entities Originally CEOs were not included, but they were invited to join as trust grew.

  19. Initial Meetings • Early meetings were filled with contention and posturing • It took three meetings to get the group to agree on common interests • Flexibility • Predictability • Affordability

  20. First Two Issues: Flexibility & Predictability • They would be addressed with a new schedule • With the help of the consultant the group agreed to a master schedule through 2016 • The schedule depended on the creation of a Slip Stage

  22. Collaboration: The Sense of Team Evolved • After the huge step of creating the Master Calendar, the CEOs truly got on board and • Developed a new agreement governing the use of the Center • Conducted a thorough venue assessment together

  23. The Next Key Issue: Affordability After openly examining each organization’s financials, the arts groups gained a shared sense of the collective’s challenge. They then organized an innovative joint fundraising effort to “endow rent.” Organization of the Arts Partnership Campaign demonstrated to all of their board members, donors and others that it was a “New Day” for all who call Ordway home.

  24. Surprising Results • Funds raised to date: $10 million of $32 million goal plus $10 million for the capital projects • The Saint Paul Foundation was entrusted with managing the endowment.

  25. Success of Even Greater Magnitude The newly collegial arts leaders enjoyed a major public policy win They partnered with environmentalists, hunters and fishing enthusiasts Sales tax of $240 million per year for 25 years

  26. Community Leadership: Lessons Learned Start with finding common ground Have some neutral interests at the table Be patient and allow people to find their own way to solutions

  27. Lessons Learned (Continued) • Be satisfied with small successes along the way • Hire the right consultant • Use the implied leverage of philanthropic resources very subtly

  28. What to Avoid Pretending there aren’t individual agendas in play Assuming complex issues can be resolved quickly

More Than We Imagined The Arts Partnership is a formal and permanent vehicle for ongoing collaboration Master calendar has scheduling for all resident arts organizations until 2016 Boards are ecstatic that the Ordway problem no longer dominates discussions There is excitement, respect and frequent demonstrations of mutual interest
