I BNWAS REGULATION 1.SOLAS REQUIREMENT The requirements making it mandatory to have a ‘Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) fitted to all passenger and cargo vessels can be found in the amendments made to SOLAS Chapter V Resolution 19 that were adopted by the IMO in the Resolution MSC 292 (86) on 5th June 2009. 2.BNWAS REGULATION • IMO Resolution MSC 128 (75), MSC 81/23/2 & NAV 51/18 • IEC 62616 ‘Maritime Navigation and Radio Communication Equipment and System’ • - Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System 3.REASON FOR USING BNWAS • Increase in marine accidents • - Ships are larger in size, an increase in solo watch keeper • Japanese & Danish flag ship– Positive effect such as a decrease in a ship accident

I BNWAS REGULATION 4.BNWASPURPOSE • The purpose of BNWAS (Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System) is to monitor bridge • activity and detect operator disability which could lead to marine accidents. 5.BNWAS APPLICATION DATE • Ships of 150 gross tonnage and upwards and passenger ships irrespective of size constructed • on or after July 01st • Passenger ships irrespective of size constructed on 1st July 2011, not later that first survey • after 1st July 2011 • Ships of 3,000 gross tonnage and upwards constructed before 1st July 2011, not later that first • survey after 1st July 2012 • Ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 3,000 gross tonnage constructed before • 1st July 2011, not later that first survey after 1st July 2013 • Ships of 150 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 500 gross tonnage constructed before • 1st July 2011, not later that first survey after 1st July 2014
