  3. Federal law prohibits buying and selling organs for transplant. In 2005: • Doctors transplanted 28,000 organs in the U.S. • more than 21,000 from deceased donors • 7,000 from living donors • 6,000 patients died while waiting for a transplant • 91,000 patients were on a waiting list for transplants (all organs). • The waiting list for transplants increased at twice the rate of donations • Survival rates for transplant recipients continued to increase
