  2. Repaso • In Spanish, sometimes there are two verbs that are used by one verb in English: • Tocar & Jugar • Ser & Estar • There are also two verbs that mean to know: • Saber & Conocer • Both ‘saber’ and ‘conocer’ have irregular yo forms in the present tense.

  3. Conocer – toknow • ‘Conocer’ is used to talk about: • People you know • Places you are familiar with • Meeting someone for the first time • Ejemplo: • Yoconozco*a tuhermanoAntonio. • Yoconozco Miami. • *This is called the personal ‘a’ and goes in between ‘conocer’ and a person.

  5. Notice the contrast between saber and conocer in the following sentences. Yo sé quién es Plácido Domingo, pero no conozco al señor Domingo personalmente. I know who Plácido Domingo is, but I don’t know Mr. Domingo personally. Sabemos dónde está Tegucigalpa, pero no conocemos la ciudad. We know where Tegucigalpa is, but we aren’t familiar with the city. Julia sabe que Rigoberta Menchú recibió el premio Nobel, pero no conoce sus obras. Julia knows that Rigoberta Menchú received the Nobel prize, but she isn’t acquainted with her works.
