  2. MICE RF power Review 7 December 2011 Reviewers Ralph PasquinelliFermilab Kevin Ronald Strathclyde Pete McIntosh STFC DL Mark Keelan STFC RAL Mike Woodward STFC RAL ErkJensen CERN – By phone Presenters Andy Moss (DL) RF power station Alan Grant (DL) RF layout Steve White (DL) RF controls • Review Charge • To review the MICE RF power installation and distribution layout in terms of: •  Suitability of components, materials and equipment for the MICE application and performance specification so that a major purchase can be confidently made • Specifically address RF control and monitoring and measurement of RF phase, amplitude and frequency • Compatibility and integration of the entire system with its surroundings • Ease with which the system can be assembled and tested • Suitable flexibility to adapt to each of the discrete MICE assembly steps Report to MICE beforeXmas

  8. Predicted hall layout for RF components Comment: 4 Amplifiers go to 8 cavities A1  C1&C2, A2  C3 and C4 etc. etc. Coulditbesufficient to consider the cavities in pairs with relative phase adjusted for central muon velocity and adjustpair’s phase at driver levelwithout the cumbersome trombones Andy Moss

  9. Access & Egress Amplifier cannotbelifted. Discussed access & egress with Fire Safety Officer. Agreed this arrangement would be acceptable. NB: This generatedsubstantialdiscussion and needs to be revisited: reviewerswondered if access to maintainwaspracticalenough Alan Grant

  12. Timescale Current work in progress: • RF testing of System #1 with new 4616 and TH116 tubes Nov 11 to Dec11 Future work (Step V): time-scales to be confirmed • Assembly of CERN TH116 amplifier (System #2) ---------------------- (July 2012) • Test CERN amplifier at Daresbury ----------------------------------------- (December 2012) • Develop RF Control Systems • Pack & ship complete system #1 to RAL --------------------------------- (January 2013) • Install RF System #1 in MICE Hall ----------------------------------------- (May 2013) • Test complete RF system #1 at RAL -------------------------------------- (September 2013) • Construct & test 4616 #2 amplifier, power supply & controls • Construct & test TH116 #2 power supply & controls • Test complete RF system #2 at DL • Pack & ship system #2 to RAL • Install RF System #2 in MICE Hall • Test complete RF system #2 at RAL Tasks in red are required for TIARA (deadline in brackets) MICE RF Design Review December 2011 Chris White

  13. Close out notes (A.Blondel, and M.-E .Shewry) • “MICE is not ready to go to the RF superstore to buy a lot of stuff” • Need another review when more detailed plan has been established for stepwise testing. • Clock ticking with 6-9 month lead time • Final triodes High Power T116 tubes are a concern. • Need to review situation regarding Thales tubes with Andrew Taylor. • MICE should address issue minimum gradient for studies • vswhat needed for final measurement • RF system depends extensively on 4 inch coax for which 1MW level testing is needed. • Need system test of 1MW RF system (one cavity with whole system) • Perhaps RF cavity that is at Fermilabafter cavity conditioned at 1.5MW level • (or do it at RAL?)

  14. Close out notes (II) • Shield wall: 4616 AMP on top of mezzanine -- is it protected? • MICE magnetic fields should have be studied (action to Preece and Courthold) • Need beam physicist (Derun was not there) to have overview of RF system as a whole. • Funding from STFC, MRI + TIARA is complicated and confused (Peter McIntosh) • On controls: individual cavity frequency feedback loop control is needed (see with Derun) • Tune cavities as pairs -- what we lose by design of tuning of individual cavities to middle of range ([ 0.985-1] ) we gain by getting rid of the trombones. • Since there is no condition for step VI put as much of step VI as you can right away !

  15. RF power: nextsteps -- important to integratebeamphysicist in following discussions: (at least Derun) -- take stock of remarks by reviewers and revisit a few things -- integratetesting plan and re-draw plan -- re-establishschedule

  16. News Runistaking place (veryniceresults!) Aims: 0. re-establishtarget performance and improveincludingbeambump 1: check performance of new TOF photomultipliers 2: try to estimate the contamination of pions in the muon beam 2.1 first scan in momentumtof criss-cross to establishresponse of pions vs muons atgiven value of TOF 2.2 use KL to identify a clean sample of pions. 3. Verify performance of CKOV and pion muon separationathighmomentum 4. More checks on e+ e- time of flight difference (reverse solenoid or scan intensity) 5. Possiblytry to symmetrizemomentum distribution by moving pion momentum down 6. Possibly do last point of momentumemittancematrix

  17. AGENDA Nextanalysis meeting: 22 December 2011 NextVideoconference 19 January 2012 Next collaboration meeting: 8-11 february 2012 at RAL MPB: 8 March 2012 FAC: 19 March 2012

  18. Some recommendations by MPB in July 2011: Recommendations (MICE is asked to report at the next MPB meeting 8 March 2012 on these) -Engage Chinese manufacturing partners during CC magnet testing and cryostat construction in the US - Monitor 2011 Milestones and report to the next project board on their follow up and achievement - Encourage project to evaluate more thoroughly step IV running - Continue to recommend priority to be given to RF cavity tests well before commissioning step V to reduce project risks - Recommend early soak test of RF power sources - Recommend incorporating enough instrumentation to minimize occurrence and consequences of system-wide magnet quench NB we don’t have to do everything they say, but we have to take it seriously and report on it.

  19. Screen preview FOR NEXT MEETING (not exhaustive list) Spectrometer solenid cold mass is closed and about to be testing. FC magnet completed (cooled) and in time for delivery end of February CC drawings review passed. First scenarios for construction of CC magnets LH2 system tested with Liquid Hydrogen Results from December run: -- is CKOV telling pi/mu reliably at 300 MeV/c? -- is MAUS working on real data? Analysis group producing results, tracker reconstruction software Report from Magnetic shielding WG and reference time WG Establish run plan for step IV!

  20. Next CM willbeorganized by -- StefaniaRicciardi -- Victoria Blackmore -- Alain Blondel -- Mary- Elizabeth Shewry -- registration call comingsoon
