  2. What causes trichomoniasis? • It is caused by a protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis • Commonly called yeast infection.

  3. How do you get trichomoniasis? • This infection occurs in the vagina of the women • Sexual intercourse can transmit this infection to men

  4. Who gets trichomoniasis? • It is mostly an infection of women • 3 million people are infected every year • Newborn babies can get it during childbirth

  5. What happens to women who get trichomoniasis? • Painful inflammation of the vagina • Itching of the vagina and vulva • Yellow frothy offensive discharge from the vagina • Sexual intercourse may be painful

  7. What happens to men who get trichomoniasis? • Usually no symptoms • May have some discomfort in the urethra • The head of the penis may become inflammed and hurt a bit

  8. How does the doctor test for Trichomoniasis? Women • Sample of the discharge from the vagina Men • Swabstick and wipe the urethra

  9. What is the treatment for Trichomaniasis? • The infected person and any partners should be treated with a medication called metronidazole.

  12. What causes pubic lice and scabies? • Pubic lice is caused by a small wingless insect called Phthirus pubis • Scabies is caused by a tiny mite called Sarcoptes scabiei

  14. How do you get pubic lice or scabies? • The insect can be passed on by sexual contact • It can also be passed on everyday objects such as towels, washcloths, clothes, pillows, and bed sheets

  15. What happens to people who get pubic lice or scabies? • The lice burrow into the skin • They cause redness and itching • The lice hang out around hair

  18. How does the doctor test for pubic lice or scabies? • Lice can be seen with the naked eye. • To make an accurate diagnosis of scabies, a doctor takes a scraping of the irritated area and examines it under a microscope.

  19. How is pubic lice orscabies treated? • A lotion containing lindane, malathion or carbaryl should be applied to all infected areas. • All clothing should be washed in water hotter than 140 deg F. • Any sexual partners should also be treated.
