  11. Securing Funding for Your Program – Even in Challenging Times Deb Walter, NBCT Kirksey Middle School Rogers, AR

  12. Survey the field… • secure support and approval from your principal or administration to pursue different sources of funding options for your program • provide justification and applicable content standards to support your request to seek funding for your program. Present a professional proposal… • get organized and start a paper trail of your mission, folders, emails, & notes from meetings

  13. Why do you want or need additional funding for your program? Expand your curriculum? Purchase new equipment that provides new opportunities to meet your state content standards? Cross-curricular applications in other core academic subjects benefiting my students? www.skillastics.com

  14. Think outside the box for funding sources…start on the inside and work out Start within your own school Meet your school PTO/PTA president and pitch your idea for funding help Ask for PTO/PTA help to do a fundraiser for your program T-shirt sales, PE uniforms, Valentines day event, after school events. Raffle tickets – Movie passes Car smash - $1.00 Dunk tank - $1.00 Hat day - $1.00 to wear hat to school Talent show % of concession stand sales at games Adventure race – 5K

  15. Get to know your students parents? • Do a quick survey of your students in class. • Where do your parents work? Make contact lists, start networking at parent teacher conferences, ball games, get phone numbers, and emails. • Relationships…relationships…relationships… • ASK your students…Do you think your parents employer would donate a small gift certificate or product from their company for a PE raffle giveaway to raise money to purchase new equipment for our PE classes? • Send home a letter, email, or phone call.

  16. Interesting items that might be donated to your program… Don’t limit your opportunities…be creative there are no rules! Fishing lures Coffee mugs, cups… Towels Beauty products Food gift certificates Bicycles Kayaks Trips Limo rides Senior photo package Clorex wipes Rakes Make-up Clothes Shoe’s Movie passes Sports equipment Spa packages Makeovers Hotel nights

  17. Promote your program… • Get the word out…don’t be shy • Call the newspaper • TV station • Send out emails with pictures and event dates • Create a bulletin board with your wish list and post it in cafeteria, gym, or hallways • Speak to civic groups about your program • Set up a booth at ball games…promote your program with pictures & student letters of support • Present at school board meetings with students

  18. Chase down leads immediately… • Parents love to help out when asked… • As students get older in middle school or high school parents seldom are asked to volunteer to help out at the schools… • Pick up the phone, text kids/parents, drop an email, write a letter, introduce yourself at the game, work the car line, parent conferences, or front office in the mornings

  19. If you land a great contact… • Write a thank you note immediately!!! • Even better is have your students write the thank you notes in class. Personal hand notes are best! • Send a picture of your students with the gift card, product, or items donated. • Keep your contact list up to date and stay in-touch from time to time, not just when you need something… • Network and build relationships thru the year.

  20. The Grant Game... “Be a nickel and dime collector” • Look for local small grants in your district. Most school districts have a local foundation grant cycle. $100.00 - $3000.00 it varies…so ask your administrator or district grant coordinator. • Optimist Clubs, Rotary Clubs, VFW Clubs, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, and other Civic organizations • Generally $500.00 - $2000.00 • Corporation Grants – Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, ING • Generally $1ooo.oo - $ 10,000 • Visit http://www.skillastics.com/ to receive grant writing tips and info about grant sources. • PEP Grants - $100,000 - $500,000 Scheduled for release in about 30 days. http://www2.ed.gov/programs/whitephysed/index.html

  21. Grant sources I have had great luck with… • Nike • Best Buy • Target • Wal-Mart Family Foundation • F3 - Future Fisherman Foundation • Arkansas Game & Fish Commission • NFL Play 60 – Fuel Up to Play • Michael Jordan Grant • Weyerhaeuser Grant • Rotary, Optimist, Civic Grants, Community Foundations • ING • National Fishing and Boating Foundation • PE4LIFE

  22. Be Positive & Passionate • Don’t let people discourage you…”oh grants are too hard,” “I’ve tried that it does not work.” • If you don’t succeed at the first few attempts keep writing and pursuing another direction… • The squeaky wheel gets the grease… • Good luck…there is money waiting for you so go out and get it!
