  2. Before preparing the strategic plan for installing TWSI, contractors must address one significant issue, i.e., where to install the TWSI. According to legislation, it's mandatory for contractors to install tactile walking surface indicators to indicate the visually impaired about the hazards in their path of travel. The same is true regarding the installation of accessibility low stair landing indicator. But, unfortunately, in most situations, although contractors know the importance of installing code-compliant tactile solutions, they fail to address the national and provincial code requirements that tactile indicators must meet. This is the reason why we have created this go-to guide about code-compliant TWSI that will make the installation process hassle-free for the contractors.

  3. Location of the TWSI Contractors need to understand that stairways have to be properly marked and easy to find. To make the stairways accessible and to reduce hazards, contractors have to install attention TWSI at the top of the stairway. Contractors should not only ensure that the tactile indicators for stairs comply with all the building codes, but also should meet the installation guidelines. At stairs, attention TWSI must be present at the top of the stairs and on landings at the entry of the stair system. Installation guidelines Contractors have to follow basic guidelines for installing TWSI. They must be placed at the top of each flight of stairs at landings longer than 2,100 mm that don’t have continuous handrails on both sides. The tactile indicators must be present at locations where the regular stairway pattern is interrupted. Also, the tactile indicators must comply with color contrast and other required code requirements.

  4. Treads and Risers Contractors have to install treads and raisers at the stairways that require users to step unevenly. Contractors have to arrange the treads and raisers in such a way that users can maintain a consistent climbing rhythm. According to the accessibility solutions provider, before installing treads and raisers, contractors must follow specific guidelines. · Stairs should have even riser heights and tread depths. · Risers should have a maximum height of 180 mm, and treads must be 280 mm deep. · Contractors have to ensure that the risers are not open. · Also, treads should be made from slip-resistant materials and should extend the full width of the tread. The surface should cover at least half the depth of the tread starting at the nosing. With this guide on the code-compliant TWSI for stairs, contractors will be able to install the tactile indicators as per the code standards. The Tactile solutions provider will make it easy for the contractors to find the code-compliant tactile solutions for their project.
