  1. Quantifying Upwelling In Large Marine Eco- Systems Quilmes A UMI-IFAECI proposal to study the Malvinas Current and Southwestern Atlantic shelf ecosystem

  2. Long term objective: MC variability and its role as a controlling mechanism of the carbon budget in the Patagonian Shelf. • 1. Proposal scope • What don’t we know that matters? • Can we asses if there is a relationship between the MC transport and the SW continental shelf circulation? • The role of the MC in the biodiversity of phytoplankton (and/or micro-organism). Relationship between variation in biomass and biodiversity. • The upwelling related to the MC. Why the MC is HNLC? • The high concentrations of chlorophyll in the overshoot region. Do we expect an important role from aerosols fertilization? • What are the mechanisms controlling the interannual variability of the chl-a on the continental shelf?

  3. What is the relevance of the question ? Impact on the CO2 budget. Impact on climate variability. Impact on biodiversity. Impact on knowledge of shelf circulation variability. All assessed at regional scale but relevant globally 2. Proposal organisation and needs What is the method followed ? We will collect in-situ data (moorings, gliders, time series, biogeochemical data from cruises) in conjunction with satellite data (SST, chlorophyll-a, salinity, altimetry) and we will implement a coupled physical-biogeochemical model in the region. Who are the participants and partners ? M. Saraceno, C. Provost, A. Piola, A. Bianchi, D. Ruiz-Pino, N. Sennechael, S. Romero, A.P. Osiroff, P. Flombaum, R. Guerrero, V Garçon, E. Palma, phd students, post-doc, What are the resources needed ? Ship time (Puerto Deseado), equipment (DT INSU), Ayuda DT INSU and DITM LOCEAN, Post doc

  4. 3. Fund seeking plan What are the suitable calls ? OSTST Jason 3 CNES, ANR What is the primary target ? the back-uptargets ? ANR What is the application calendar and resulting action plan ? OSTST this fall, ANR 2012
