Rehoboam. The King of Peer Pressure. Background. Rehoboam was the first king of Judah in the divided kingdom, 931-913 B.C. (1 Kings 12:1-21; 14:21-31; 2 Chron. 10:1 – 12:16) He was known for dividing the kingdom by following unwise counsel (1 K. 12:1-24; 2 Chron. 10:1 – 11:4)

  2. Background • Rehoboam was the first king of Judah in the divided kingdom, 931-913 B.C. (1 Kings 12:1-21; 14:21-31; 2 Chron. 10:1 – 12:16) • He was known for dividing the kingdom by following unwise counsel (1 K. 12:1-24; 2 Chron. 10:1 – 11:4) • Judah was evil with idolatry, sodomy, and abomination during his reign (1 K. 14:21-24)

  3. Background • He fortified Judah (1 K. 14:25-28; 2 Chron. 11:5-12) • He mixed idolatrous religion with the true religion (2 Chron. 11:15-17) • He had multiple wives and concubines (2 Chron. 11:18-23) • He grew strong, forsook the Lord, but later humbled himself (2 Chron. 12:1-12)

  4. Background • He strengthened himself, did that which was evil, and did not set his heart to seek the Lord (2 Chron. 12:13-14) • He warred with Jeroboam continually (1 K. 14:29-31; 2 Chron. 12:15-16)

Rehoboam: King of Peer Pressure1 Kings 12:8 • He did not want the “old” ways (Jer. 6:16; Acts 17:21) • He was not interested in the older, wiser men… • Older, wiser parents (Prov. 1:8; 6:20; 23:22; 30:11) • Older, wiser Christians (1 Pet. 5:5) • Older, wiser preachers (2 Tim. 3:10) • Older, wiser elders (Heb. 13:7,17) • He gave into peer pressure (Prov. 1:10; 1 Cor. 15:33)
