  1. Do Now

  2. Aim: What causes the moon to show phases? • Topic: Unit 8 Earth in Space • Main Idea: Moon Phases

  3. 1) What portion of the moon is always illuminated by the sun? • One half of the moon is always lit.

  4. 2) Can we always see the entire illuminated portion of the moon? • We don’talways see the entire lit portion.

  5. 3b) What is the length of the moon’s revolution period? • It takes 27 1/3 days.

  6. 4) Explain why we see only one side of the moon? • This is because the moon rotates and revolves at the same rate.

  7. 5) Explain what is meant by the term “phases of the moon”. • These are the different shapes of the lit portion of the moon.

  8. 6) Explain what causes the phases of the moon. • They are caused by the revolution of the moon around the earth.

  9. 7) Explain what causes the apparent rising and setting of the moon. • It is caused by the rotation of the earth.

  10. 8) Explain why we are not able to see the new moon. • This is because the lit half of the moon is not facing the earth.

  11. 9) Name the four principle phases of the moon. • Full, new, first quarter, third (last) quarter.

  12. 10) Explain why it takes the moon 29 ½ days to go through its phases, but only 27 1/3 days to make a complete revolution. • As the moon is revolving around the earth the earth is also revolving around the sun and it takes a little time for the moon to catch up to finish the phases.
