Application Procedure • Alternative Routes Assessment Form, evaluated by Membership and Qualifications Board (MQB) • If MQB recommends “Experiential Learning Route to Chartered Engineer” candidate invited to produce portfolio describing learning achievements. • Candidates also sent Regulations and advised that process is difficult. • When candidate accepts, Mentor appointed.   18. (a) Report on Experiential Learning • Describes experiential learning of candidate relating this to the competences of a Chartered Engineer. • Demonstrates understanding of engineering principles upon which claimed knowledge and skills are based. • Demonstrates ability to apply competences in a wide range of settings. • Letter of Certification from each employer. (b) Report on an Engineering Project • Project undertaken during 5 years immediately prior to application to Engineers Ireland. • Nature of project should support candidate’s claim in respect of competences. The Examiners • Two Chartered Engineers with experience cognate to that of candidate’s • Current or former academic staff member of university or institute of technology offering one or more honours degree programmes accredited by Engineers Ireland • Examiners trained as interviewers and briefed by Registrar • Examiners make recommendation to MQB VPL Seminar, University of Limerick, 16th February 2007 3rd ABET International Congress, Tampa, Florida, October 2006

  23. The Oral Examination • Duration 3 hours, commences with 20-minute presentation by candidate • Based on portfolio content • Evaluate candidate’s understanding of what has been presented in portfolio and his/her engineering competences • Questions will cover relevant underlying scientific and engineering principles • At end of Examination candidate given an opportunity to highlight issues especially those candidate considers may not have been adequately covered.   24. Recommendation of Examiners • Admit to CEng - recommendation to next MQB meeting • Do not admit to CEng – report to Board of Examiners giving reasons related to competence deficits identified. Duration of Procedure • Completion and submission of portfolio, from date of acceptance up to one year • Examiners have up to one month to read portfolio • Candidate given two weeks minimum notice of Oral Examination • Candidate informed of decision following MQB meeting at which Recommendation of Examiners considered.   27. Conferring of CEng Parchment Successful candidates are conferred with a CEng parchment either at the National Conferring of Titles ceremony of Engineers Ireland or at a Regional Conferring.
