Re-take policy: Semester 2 • Re-takes are ONLY available for 9th and 10th graders, no exceptions. • You must complete the entire re-take process within ONE WEEK from the original assessment date. • Re-takes must be completed during my tutoring hour (Mondays 3:30-4:30). If you can’t make it, you must make other arrangements with me. • You will be required to complete a “Think Sheet” before you are allowed to complete a re-take. • You are allowed ONE re-take per assessment.

  7. le verbe “connaître” • Note the forms of the IRREGULAR verb connaître(to know): Passé composé: J’aiconnu. . .

  8. connaître • Connaître means to know in the sense of to be acquainted or familiar with. IT is used primarily with PEOPLE and PLACES. • In the passé composé, connaître means to meet for the first time. • Oùas-tuconnu François? (Where did you meet François?)

  9. connaître • Also note the expression faire la connaissance de(to meet, to get to know). Oùas-tu fait la connaissance de François? • The verb reconnaître(to recognize) is conjugated like connaître. Je n’ai pas reconnu ta cousine.

  11. les pronomscompléments: le, la, les • Definitions: As we already discussed, the DIRECT OBJECT of a verb is the thing or person that is receiving the action (the verb). • Try in English: Write these sentences and underline the DIRECT OBJECT: • Play the guitar. • Every actor played his part. • The crowd will cheer the President. • We can climb the hill and fly the kite.

  12. le, la, les (cont’d) • In each of the questions below, the underlined noun comes directly after the verb. It is the DIRECT OBJECT of the verb. Note the form and position of the DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS that are used to replace them:

  15. forms (cont’d) • Note that le and la become l’ before a vowel sound. • The DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS le, la, l’, and les can refer to PEOPLE and THINGS. • TuvoisHélène? Oui, je lavois. • Tuvoiscetteaffiche? Oui, je lavois.

  17. position • In general, the object pronouns le, la, l’, and les come BEFORE the verb. Qui connaîtÉric?

  18. position (cont’d) • In AFFIRMATIVE COMMANDS, the pronouns come AFTER the verb and are connected to it by a HYPHEN. In NEGATIVE COMMANDS, the come BEFORE the verb. J’invite Sylvie? J’achète les billets?

  20. des faux amis (some false friends) • The verbs attendre, chercher, écouter, and regarder take DIRECT OBJECTS in French, but not in English. Compare:
