  2. The Church in Crisis • Between 500 and 1000 church were suffering

  3. Reforms • Reforms began quietly in 910 with the founding of a Benedictine monasteryat Cluny in France. • One way that the church adapted was bybuilding MONASTERIES • Monasteries were communities in which Christians gave up their private possessions to pursue lives in prayer.

  4. Spiritual Revival • New age of religious feeling was born • Called the Age of Faith

  5. More Changes • Popes prompted reforms • Enforced laws against the marriage of priests • Enforced laws against the selling of church offices.

Church Reorganization • New Church Structureadvised by the Curia – a group created to advise the pope. • Made canon law (church law) • Extended the power of the pope • Church collected taxes called tithes • Early 1200’s, success in their reforms • New church group arose • Friars – group that moved from place to place spreading the ideas of the church • Women became nunsand joined in the spiritual revival
