Common Girth Measurements Sites
Through the mesosternale (mid-sternum).
Around the midpoint of the upper arm.
Bicep - Flexed
Around the bicep's maximum circumference.
Immediately superior to the thyroid
cartilage (Adam or Eve's apple).
One cm below the gluteal fold.
Half way down the thigh.
Taken between the bottom rib and
Illiac Crest. (small of the waist)
Circumference. around the most posterior
aspect of the buttox.
Around the calf's maximum circumference
Maximum girth of the forearm.
Distal to both styloid Processes
Narrowest circumference. of ankle.
Fitness leaders may wish to use only a few sites deemed appropriate for the individual subject.
Waist to Hip Ratio
WHR = Waist cm / Hip cm
This was the first anthropometrical indicator used to predict health risks due to excessive deep abdominal fat. It can be a useful predictor of CHD, stroke, and diabetes mellitus. Large changes in mass are required to make any significant difference to WHR. Men and women with WHR's seen below may be considered to have an increased risk of the fore mentioned conditions.
Males > or = to 0.95
Females > or = to 0.80
Apples or Pears
Individuals that fit into either of the above categories are said to have body types that are more like apples than pears.
