  16. Technically Speaking RV antifreeze is intended to protect drinking water systems in mobile homes from freezing in the winter. Because this type of antifreeze is used in systems intended for consumption, only the purest type of propylene glycol is allowed for this application. This type of PG is called USP grade (or food grade). It is the most expensive type of PG. Although the propylene glycol is expensive, the corrosion inhibitors are not. RV antifreeze is intended to protect drinking water systems from rusting. Drinking water systems are composed mainly of steel piping. For this reason the only corrosion inhibitor found in RV antifreeze is phosphate. Because RV antifreeze is intended to be flushed out seasonally, the corrosion inhibitors are not designed for long term protection. Another salient point is that RV antifreeze is intended to protect pipes from bursting. This is known as burst protection. Burst protection to -50F is achieved with under a 35% propylene glycol solution. For this reason most RV antifreezes come pre-diluted with as much as 65% water.

  17. The FDA has determined propylene glycol to be "generally regarded as safe" for use in food, cosmetics and medicines. Similar to ethylene glycol, propylene glycol affects the body's chemistry by increasing the amount of acid, resulting in metabolic problems. However, larger amounts of the substance are needed to cause this effect. Eating or drinking very large amounts can result in death, while large amounts can result in nausea, convulsions, slurred speech, disorientation, and heart and kidney problems. Propylene Glycol is considerably less toxic than ethylene glycol. Camco has been a leader in the growth of Propylene Glycol technology over the past 30 years, and is a name that is trusted in the industry. Propylene Glycol is the active ingredient in RV and boiler antifreeze and is recognized by the FDA as GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe). Over the past year the cost and availability of Propylene Glycol, the main ingredient in all of our boiler and RV antifreeze, has been extremely volatile. So planning and forecasting as soon as possible is in your best interest, to lock in pricing for a specific time period, and ensure that you have product on the shelves. Because of the increased cost of raw materials, some manufacturers are selling reclaimed Propylene Glycol. This reclaimed PG can contain many unsafe contaminates and can be recognized by a burnt rubber smell.

  18. Questions • Can I use RV anti-freeze in my boiler? • No, Boiler anti-freeze is specifically designed for use in you boiler. RV antifreeze does not contain a high percentage of propylene glycol with inhibitor additives, and is designed for winter storage only. Boiler antifreeze also contains a corrosion inhibitor that is not included in the RV antifreeze. • Can I use any boiler anti-freeze in my new system? • No, Boiler AL -100 anti-freeze is specifically designed for use in new boiler or heating systems. RV anti-freeze does not contain a high percentage of propylene glycol, and is designed for winter storage only. Boiler anti-freeze also contains a corrosion inhibitor that is not included in the RV anti-freeze.

  19. Questions • What are the differences between the different RV anti-freeze products? • Each RV anti-freeze products contains additional ingredients for use in the different systems or vehicles. The different vehicles have different requirements like winterizing boat and marine systems. • Does anti-freeze containing alcohol dry out my seal and gaskets? • Alcohol does tend to dry our rubber. However our anti-freeze contains propylene glycol as well as alcohol. Thepropylene glycol helps to lubricate and preserve your seals.
