First man in space • First man in space and the first to orbit the earth was Yuri Gagarin • He made history on April 12, 1961. • From Moscow Russia • Went to Orenburg aviation school • Launched at 9:07 a.m. Touched the ground at 10:55 a.m.
First American In space • Alan Shepard was the first American in space • Freedom 7 spacecraft • Took off from Florida on May 5th, 1961 • 10 years later he left earth again and was the 5th one to walk on the moon, first to play golf. • Time in space: 9 days • Russia beat the U.S by one month launching into space.
Born November 18th, 1923 • Grew up in New Hampshire • Graduated high school then attended the U.S. Naval Academy. • He was selected as one of the first seven astronauts for the organization.

First American in orbit • John Glenn was the first man in orbit. • April 12, 1961 he orbited. • At the age of 77 he became the oldest person to travel in space, at that time. • Born July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio. • After difficulties he had to manually control the craft.
First space walk • Alexei Leonou first person to space walk • March 18, 1965 • 79 years old • Problems arose when air leaked out of his suit and was barely able to return to the space ship.
First close up images of Mars • Between 1962- 1973, NASA’s Jet Propulsion laboratory designed and built 10 spacecraft name Mariner. • Mariners were all relatively small robotic explorers launched on an Atlas rocket. • Designed to explore the inner solar system. • Mariner 4 went past Mars on July 14, 1965 getting the first close- up images.
First space rendezvous • Orbital maneuver during which 2 spacecraft, one is often a space station, arrive at the same orbit and approach to a very close distance. • First accomplished by U.S. astronoaut Wally Schirra. • December 15, 1965. • Gemini 6 spacecraft within 1 foot of Gemini 7.
First docking of two spacecraft's • Neil A. Armstrong and David R. Scott on board • Launch date was March 16, 1966 • Landing date was March 17, 1966 • Tried and failed many times before they got it right • Gemini 6 blew up whenever they test launched it.
First spacecraft to soft- land on the moon • Soviet Union was the first to land on the moon • Launched Luna 1 and failed, went into spaces orbit. • September 12,1966 first time any has ever been on the moon. • Luna 2 was the first to photograph the moon’s far side before crashing on September 15th.
First American spacecraft to soft- land on the moon • Surveryor 1, name of the spacecraft. • First attempt for the United States. • Soviet Union achieved there moon landing four months before us. • The U.S. was expected to fail at least 4 times before having success. • July 6th, was the day history was made.
First U.S. space tragedy • On January 27, 1967, tragedy struck the Apollo program. • Flash fire occurred in command module 012 during launch pad test. • Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom, Lt. Col. Edward H. White, Roger B. Chaffee died in the accident. • After the accident there were major modifications made.
First spaceflight casualty • Soviet Union announced the launch. • Soyuz – 1, name of spacecraft. • Vladimir Komarov -veteran cosmonaut. • No one really knew the mission. • Uncovered on June 11, 1989. • Pressured into the mission, and they plan wasn’t full proof leading to the death of the passengers.
First Venus Probe • Venus was the first planet to ever be reached by a space probe. • The Soviet probe, Venera 7 was the first to land on Venus. • Put out of operation due to its high temp. • Mariner 2 flew within 34,400 kilometers of Venus and sent information to Earth about its temperature and atmosphere.
First Moon Orbit • Zond 5- formal member of the soviet Zond program. • Zond-5 was the first spacecraft to circle the Moon and return to land on Earth. • September 18, 1968, the day history was made. • High quality pictures of Earth were taken at a distance of 90,000 km.
First manned Apollo mission • On October 11th, 1968, Apollo 7 was launched form Cape Kennedy, Fla. • Wally Schirra, Donn Fulton Eisele, and R. Walter Cunningham was aboard. • 11 day mission in Earths orbit, it was the first successful manned mission of the Apollo program. • Main objective was to demonstrate the spacecraft’s safety and reliability for journeys to the moon.
First Manned moon orbit • Apollo 8 • December 21, 1968 first moon orbit • Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders were the ones on board. • 6 days, 3 hours was the missions duration • Apollo 8 had originally been envisioned as an Earth- orbit checkout mission.
