  1. Closers The most emphatic place in a clause or sentence is the end. This is the climax; and during the momentary pause that follows, the last word continues, as it were, to reverberate in the reader’s mind. It has, in fact, the last word. One should therefore think twice about what one puts at a sentence-end.

  2. Three imperatives for effective closers • Focus on your main point (which may be your final point.) • Gratify us with at least one last new twist or phrase to make your point memorable. • End with emotional impact.

  3. Types of Conclusions • A conclusion is NOT merely a summary of your argument. It should answer: So what? What if? Now what? A conclusion should offer insight and explain the relevance of the argument. • See descriptions of three different types of conclusions in the handout.
