Problem outline • The cook stove technology applied is ecological sound, sustainable and will make a difference in people’s lives. • Women and children are exposed to the smoke and suffer respiratory infections. • The rural population is using low efficient cook stoves with high fuel wood consumption. Problem solving • Development of an efficient cook stove adapted to the Brazilian cookery habits • Install 100 units for social adjustment and construction improvements. • Carry out investigation on socio-economic situation, fire wood. consumption and health improvements. • Implement a landscape recovery program for sustainable cultivation • of fuel wood. • Develop the basic requirements of a dissemination strategy.

Environmental recuperation: • Education→ Future preservation • Cultivation→ Sustainable fire wood supply

Market development: • Local shops → Income generation and Masons Maintenance guaranteed • Manufacturers → Mass production developed • International → Dissemination Strategy Development MAIN PROJECT IMPACTS 2.) Financial leverage: • State Government → 4,000 units ready installed U$ 650,000 in 2007/2008 18,000 in planning phase U$ 3,871,000 in 2008/2009 • Public Health → Less costs

  7. 3.) Environmental conscience: • The Secondary Impacts are: • Education • Community mobilization • Tree nurseries MAIN PROJECT IMPACTS 4.) Up-scaling: • Carbon Credit financing • Public Health savings • Governmental funding

  8. LESSONS LEARNT The most important lessons learnt were / are: • Project partners were eager to put forward the project idea • Population accepted the new technology without hesitation • Environmental and health benefits were welcome by responsible bodies

MAIN CHALLENGES AND RESPONSES Home The main challenges were / are: • Consolidation of Schedules: Project – Governmental bodies • Optimization of cook stove construction for mass production • Set up well-organized logistics • Implement efficient environmental recuperation measures • Education of end users for proper use of the stove

FUTURE PLANS • Develop an adequate Dissemination Strategy for the Brazilian ambience (REEEP project until August 2009) • Obtain Carbon Credits ( Atmosfair, Golden Standard, Government of Norway and England) • Convince Foundations to invest in efficient cook stoves and adopted the here developed model ( e.g. Shell Foundation ) • Quantify savings in public health care by implementing efficient cook stoves (Base line data collection; Study) • Amplify environmental education and recuperation measures (Introduce at all involved communities) • Initiate international cooperation with India [ TERI, Amity University ]
