  1. Nuevas Oportunidades para el GNC en Estados Unidos Gustavo Collantes, Ph.D. Consultor, Energía y Transporte Sustentables Congreso Internacional de GNC y Otros Combustibles Gaseosos Buenos Aires, noviembre 2011

  2. Market Variables • US CNG market growth has remained stagnant, few exceptions aside • Comparative fuel economics good for commercial applications but not enough to spur significant consumer adoption • Relatively short vehicle range, big factor • Limited consumer education about virtues of CNG • Political dynamics with fuel competitors at the local/state levels • US EPA fuel economy regulations, California Zero-Emission Vehicle Program, Federal fleet requirements, and other regulatory measures have had limited impact on CNG markets • CNG has never been too sexy! • Honda Civic approximate retail prices $15,805 $24,050 $26,155

  3. Capital Costs • Chicken-and-egg problem exacerbated by high upfront costs of conversions and conventional infrastructure • Low relative price of CNG and federal/state programs do not yield sufficiently low IRR for many applications • Factors affecting conversion costs may include labor, US EPA/CARB permitting, low demand, others • Factors affecting infrastructure deployment costs may include low demand, limited competition, permitting, others

  4. Fuel Price Trends

  5. Natural Gas Supply

  6. Opportunities on CNG Storage • Sistemas ANG • Tests mostraron limitaciones con performance of altos V/V • Nuevos desarrollos en materiales y nano estructuras • Fuel system vs. cartridge system • Oportunidades en diseños innovativos e integración de sistemas

  7. Opportunities on CNG Distribution • Virtual pipeline concepts • Home refueling and vehicle-distribution integration • HCNG—synergies between CNG and hydrogen
